Maytag Dryer D-4 Model LDG8604AAE - motor noise

Recommended Posts

My dryer is making a moderate (but noticeable) low-frequency vibrating noise when operating. It is not a rumbling sound like a failed blower wheel, and doesn't sound to me like failed bearings. The dryer still functions fine, it is just louder than normal.

I just had it opened up a couple of months ago to replace the blower wheel. The rollers looked good at the time.

Put a drop of oil on each one of these bearings and see if the noise goes away. If it does then it is one of them. The nice thing you can take these off and clean them with emery cloth and also clean the shafts and then use some high temp grease when putting back together and that should take care of these, as long as they are still in good shape.

You also have these that can make a noise if they are wearing at all.

If I have to pull out the drum to get to the rollers in back, is there any reason not to just replace them (and I guess the front tumbler bearings as well)?

No reason at all, replace what ever you need, was just suggesting a way with not having the parts right there with you at time of diagnose.

Yeah, they cost money... and oil is cheap!

NO oil...NO grease on any rollers...  rear rollers or the idler roller.........The shaft will collect lint and then a bigger problem down the road.........With out hearing the sound , it could be any rotating part:wacko:.......

I have oiled a thousand rollers, motors, and idler pulleys- never had a problem resulting from it. The parts will collect lint anyway, oil the lint, they used to call it an oil wick.

Same here, I have use high temperature grease on to many to count and no problems.

The best I can describe the noise is it sounds like a WWII bomber overhead. It isn't super loud but has that droning character and about that note. So does that sound like these rollers, or is it possibly the motor itself?

Best way to separate the noise is to dismantle the machine and spin the rollers and idler pulley by hand and feel for friction that would equate to noise at a higher RPM, if the rollers and idler feel ok- be sure to make sure the blower wheel (that will be visible from the front once the front panel and bulkhead have been removed) is not stripped on the motor shaft- as that causes a low rumbling noise... not the usual piercing scream of a bad roller or idler pulley. If all those parts check ok, time to suspect the motor itself...

I just replaced the blower wheel; I know that rumbling sound and this is different. How often do the motors go bad?

At the age of this machine- anything goes. Are the drum glides pictured above good? If the drum is riding on the cork pads it can drag and groan. I have replaced many motors on older maytags- it will be a newer style emerson motor kit with a different wiring harness in most cases...

You can also oil the motor by drilling into the shoulders of it where the bearings sit, but that requires some experience to know just where to drill if you are to deliver the oil to the right area... and if the bearings have taken damage, no amount of oil can bring them back.

Part number: W10410999   Dryer drum drive motor. New style motor switch, see included instructions for details. The motor will need re-wiring.

Did you ever fix this?  I have the same issue, loud motor sounding noise, and have replaced all moving parts besides the motor.  The dryer works fine otherwise.
