Hello all, I have a GE Profile dishwasher (PDW9280J00SS) in a rental house and it appears to be dead.  My tenant has checked the breaker, the electrical socket has power, and he checked the cord attachment, and reports that all looks "normal".  I've been reading about GE dishwashers in general and found that the door switch and control board may be likely culprits.  But I have not found mention of the door switch causing an apparent no power condition on a DW with the controls on the top edge of the door (door has to be open to access controls).  Is the door switch a possible cause for a no power condition on this type of DW?

And what are the recommended tests of the door switch and control board (or other likely culprits) for this model?  Thanks in advance!

The switch(s) can be tested for continuity. These switches are normally open. Meaning no continuity when you test it, but when you push the little button (close the circuit) you should have continuity.

Thanks Ed, I guess my next questions is whether a bad door switch would throw my type of DW into a 'no power' mode.  My DW has the controls on the top of the door, so to set the controls, the machine has to have power when the door is open.  It logically makes sense to me that if the DW required the door switch to show a closed door before applying to power to the machine, then this type of DW would never have power.  The door switch causing 'no power' condition on a DW with controls on the front of the door makes sense.  Or am I thinking about this wrong?  Just trying to eliminate possible culprits if I can...

I believe this design had a recall and a thermal cutout kit added. Your TCO maybe have blown. It's not found on original schematic or parts list.

Maybe one of the other techs here could direct you to proper part number.

Thanks again, Ed.  Anyone else have any info on this thermal cutout kit?

• This is a voluntary recall. It includes 174,000 GE Profile and GE Monogram dishwashers.
• The Profile brand models were manufactured July 2003 through December 2005.
• The Monogram units January 2004 through December 2006.
Directly from the CPSC letter:
“GE has determined that water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.”
• GE has been made aware of five instances of escaped fires.
• Four caused damage to the kitchen counter-tops.
• One caused damage to adjacent cabinets and smoke damage to the home.
• No injuries have been reported.
• Consumers should disconnect power to the dishwasher and not use it until repaired.
• Consumers should contact the GE Recall
Hotline 877-275-6840 or visit the GE website

Thanks Chat, this is good news!  Indeed, this DW does qualify for the recall.  For anyone else in this boat, check out the website Chat referenced - GE offers either 1) a $200 rebate on a new Profile DW, or 2) call and schedule a free repair (probably just issues related to the recall, but better than a poke in the eye).

I run into a lot of these. If you plug model and serial number into "appliance411 date it"you can find links to the recall. Normaly by the time I get there the tub is warped and multiple components are damaged.
