maytag atlantis transmission troubleshoot

Maytag Atlantis model# mavt634awn  during agitate AND spin cycle the washer seems to do the same thing... just turn like 1/2 speed of the spin cycle and then when it stops, it seems to stop fast [ within 1-2 seconds] like there is a brake on... it does NOT agitate, it just goes in  a circle, the SAME as spin... took the belt off underneath, and it seems  [transmission pulley ]  to turn OK, but the tub inside seems to NOT turn very easily ...  motor seems OK spins fine with belt off btw... there is no water in it now, just checking for operation...

put a gallon of water in it and during the wash cycle, it spun OUT the water just like in spin cycle...EVEN on the delicate cycle...did the same thing... would the timer do this??? is there a reset??? anyway, I would appreciate some help on this...thank you

If it drains out the water during agitation, you more than likely have a timer issue.   If the agitator moves in one direction during agitation and not back and forth and no water drains during agitation then you have a bad transmission.

thanks for the reply scott... the washer does NOT agitate. but does the same thing as when spinning out ... drains [ spin's out] the water...I dumped a gallon of water in it and tried it... the bottom round thing  under the agitator against the tub turns very hard...turns the tub when you pull-push with both hands...

If it is pumping water out in agitate , Scott is right,, weird timer issue.

thanx guy's... well I guess I will try a timer... there was some co. that would let you buy a part , and if didnt work you could return it...cant remember where I saw it

Does the motor turn a different direction in "agitate" then in spin?

thank you for your response...you mean the drum??? they BOTH turn clockwise with a rubbing noise... is there a break that holds  the drum from turning freely...someone told me it was in the transmission, and that was a major problem with maytag's??? I am not sure... even just a timer is like $160 for these things...trans is around $300

Just to be sure we get this right , which way is the tub spinning is agitate cycle , and which way is it spinning in the spin cycle?   If it is the same way in both cycles you have a timer issue, if it spins opposite directions in each cycle you have transmission issues.

thank you again for you reply...yes, it spins the same way [ clockwise] and at the same speed  in both agitate and spin...so I guess it is the timer...it is also applying some kinda break, because it seems to be struggling to spin or get up speed, that would also be a bad timer sending the wrong message???

sorry, the timer will not affect the brake, may also have a thrust bearing issue.  don't spend a ton of money on this machine at the age it is.
