After cleaning out all the lint from the filter, through the tube, to the exit at the side of the house, my gas dryer still takes an hour and a half to dry a full wash.  Is this a normal amount of time, or should I look to replace old parts such as a thermostat or flame sensor?

depends on how big the load is , a normal load should take about a hour, .  will still depend on how long the vent pipe is and how many turns are in it.  try drying a load without the vent hooked up , if there is a big difference something is still going on with the vent. if no change try a set of coils on the valve first.

First question I like to ask when customers complain of long dry time.

Are the clothes coming out of washer fully spun out?

Are you using auto dry or timed dry? Could be the moisture sensor has gone bad. Try running  a timed dry cycle.

Thanks all for your replies.  Here are some answers that might clarify:

The vent pipe is 4" diameter sheet metal.  It is about 15 feet long and has 3 90-degree bends in it before it reaches the side wall of the house.  With the dryer running, the airflow at the outside of the house feels reasonably strong.

The coils on the gas valve are two years old.

The clothes coming from the washer have had the normal spin cycle of a horizontal-axis Maytag Neptune washer.

I am using auto dry.  I'll try the timed dry on a towel wash and see how long that takes.

Like evaapliance had suggested I would change the valve coils .     your model will according to the serial # will decide which valve coils to use.     You need to know if your dryers serial number is prior to the 01 series or is it o1 and beyond.            flip the lower site panel into the dryer and watch the burner flame after its started and watch if the burner lights and cycles off an on several times while it is running.  if it definitely cycles on and off with a burner flame  after 20 minutes then your coils will most likely be ok.       Igniter should glow red and then the burner should always flame on after that once the flame sensor registers the heat from the igniter.  If there is no flame at all at any time and the igniter glows on and off then you will need to check the flame sensor and check if thats good   if its good then replace the coils then . It will most likely be the coils that are the problem

Thank you Darren412 for the additional information.  My dryer is a series 2.  I was reluctant to change the valve coils because they are just two years old.  But your post leads me to think I should change them anyway: The igniter and flame work normally, but the flame goes out after 2.5 minutes.

Agree with Darren mostly like cause coils

If you see the burner light every time the ignitor comes and cycles off when flame sensor opens and you let it run for 20-30 minutes and it keeps doing this then most likely not the coils.   If you see the ignitor glow and then go out and the flame doesn't light then that would be for sure the gas valve coils, (they very seldom fail in 2 years but not impossible).

If the flame just goes out after 2.5 minutes burning and the temp isn't up to around 150 degrees coming out the exhaust then a good chance you have an air flow issue and the burner is cycling off on the hi-limit safety on the burner cone.

When the dryer is running and you open the door does it seem to stop immediately or does it kind of sound like it is still running/something turning for about 2 to 3 seconds and making a rumbling noise as it stop?   If so then you have a stripped out blower wheel.  On this style of Maytag dryer and with the age of it, this will most likely be what you find is your problem.

You need to get to the blower wheel and try to turn it by hand and make sure it is solidly attached to the motor shaft and not just spinning free on the shaft.

This is absolutely what to do !  I didn’t know at the time your coils were just two years old, but as mentioned in this world nothing is impossible with the cheap parts being made today.

I would run a cycle with it disconnected from vent with a window open for ventilation, rule out the vent

REMEMBER:   with no clothes in the dryer during testing it will cycle off and on quicker and more frequent.    When you run it with wet clothes in the dryer,  it will cycle off and on  less  frequently.   Don't over think the fact that the burner flame is shutting down after 2 1/2  minutes ok.    check the wiring in the new coils you replaced also. If you replaced the older series numbered dryer, then you will of had to cut and splice wires and use wire nuts to replace the older series model which would have actually 3 coils.       The newer series model will have just the common gas valve coils and there are just 2 coils with no rewiring or splicing of wires  (plug and play coils) you just have to remember when replacing them that the 3 wired contact coil with three contacts , gets replaced with the metal sleeve that has always been installed and kept with it. Sometimes you can remove the wired coil with three contacts on it and then the metal sleeve comes off with the coil and is left inside the coil still.  You have to remember to always remove the sleeve out of the old coil if that happens and replace it back onto the correct side of the gas valve before reinstalling the replacement coils.  Good luck with the diagnosing.
