I have an old style range with the coil style burners.  Previously, one burner would go out intermittently.  There was a bad connection where the burner plugged into the socket and their was white ash under the burner and the burner plug seems damaged from the bad connection.  Many weeks ago, replaced the burner socket, but not the burner.  Today the burner was sparking.  The end of the burner plug is black and ashy and part of it seems to have burned away.

Should I just replace the burner or could it be something else?

Could I have wired the burner socket backwards?  Would it matter?  Is their a way to check if I wired it correctly?  I only have an on/off light tester.

Thank you in advance.

Correction:  Many weeks ago, I replaced the burner socket...

It's Alternating current, can't be hooked up wrong. At this point with parts being so cheap and your time being so valuable I'd replace the element (burner) and the terminal block (burner socket) to save trouble in the long run.

Yep, and I'd inspect all the other burners for similar signs and replace those burners and sockets too.

Yep, if you put a new receptacle on and the eye is in to bad of shape , meaning you can’t file the ends smooth again, it will be a short time till you revisit your problem. As said earlier , probably better for a diy to just replace both.

replace them both.   Usually when this happens both the terminal block and the terminal ends for the burner coil are both damaged.  What happens is the arc spot damage to both parts will create super heat where they have contact with each other and that is how the damage occurs.  A small arc spot on either the terminal block or heating element terminals will create the problem you had.    So if you have a bad terminal block with terminals that have arced out onto the burner element terminals then you most likely will have arc spots on the burner element terminals and you have to replace them both.   By you just replacing the terminal block only at first is most likely why your problem had returned.  There was probably some arc damage on the original element coil that recreated the original problem you had.   "" so replace both parts again correctly and position them properly "" when installing them once more and you should be fine.    I Hope this helps  you in understanding the problem you had with the burner.
