Kenmore Gas Dryer 110.71202012 no heat

Posting for a friend - he has the dryer mentioned in the topic. Worked fine, they used the sensing setting which quit working so they started using the timed dry. It worked for a while, I think he said it was intermittent but now it's not working at all. Drum turns, just no heat. What sayeth the appliantologists?

Model: 110.71202012

Start with the basics: is the vent clear? Pop off the back and check the thermal fuses and limits for continuity. If they test good open up the front and check the ignitor for continuity.

Yep, those new timers are absolute JUNK!!!!!!

Intermittent, could be gas valve coils breaking down when they start to heat up also.

If there seems to be heat at the beginning of the cycle but no heat after running for a little while that would point to the gas valve coils.

Yes This  WPW10186032 timer in this model is most likely faulty. When ever I had this type of issue that you have explained ,  99% of the time it has been this timer.   The first thing I usually do when I come across any dryer that uses this type of timer  is set the dryer on a timed heat cycle then  check the correct timer contact with  my meter according to the wiring diagram to see if the out going power source to the heating components has failed .  If the power source has failed right away then you know its the timer.  If it is sending the proper power to the  heating components ,  then I will watch the power source while I turn the timer control knob  back and forth slowly in the timed heat part of the cycle and watch if the power source cuts out. 99% of the time the power source will cut out with this models timer.  When its intermittently working with heat , it is hard for the DIY home owner to diagnose it since you may not have the skills to properly check the out going power source from the timer with a meter for diagnosing a bad timer.  What you can do is set the timed heat cycle and if it heats right away let it heat for a minute then move the timer slowly back and forth in different positions in the cycle to hear and feel if the heat shuts off in the heated part of the cycle. If it does shut off then you know its a faulty timer.  In a timed heat cycle with a mechanical timer like this one in your model dryer, The heat source should never cut out if you move the dial while its heating in the timed part of the heat cycle. The only time the heat will cut out and shut off automatically , will be within the last 10 minutes of the timed cycle during the wrinkle free part of the timed cycle. So just stay within the 20 minute to 60 or 80 minute part of the cycle when you are moving the selector knob back and forth.   If you also hear a clicking sound off and on at certain times when you are moving the selector knob during the test , that also is an indication of the power supply to the gas valve coils intermittently shutting off power to the gas valve coils .  which is also an indication of a bad timer contact.   The techs here on this site are very good techs when it comes to advice.  So as they mentioned above , the timer will most likely be your issue.  Good luck with the testing and I hope this will be helpful in your diagnosis of your heating problem.

Thanks to all for your quick and perfect response. Based on the fact this was working on sensing and time settings, then quit on one and then finally the other, I decided to forego the remaining troubleshooting steps and went straight for the timer. That was exactly the problem, appreciate the great guidance as always. You guys rock!
