This fridge is a little over 10 years old and has started to spill water outside of the ice tray. The tray doesn’t appear to want to stay up high enough or go back far enough to the water tube that fills the tray and therefore it’s been spilling water into the finished ice cube bucket creating big blocks of ice. What should I replace to fix the issue or at this age would it be wiser to replace the fridge? Thanks for your help!

Less expensive to replace the icemaker...than the entire refrigerator.

It's your call.

Good point, I hadn’t considered replacing the whole assembly, I kind of wrote off that idea since I “assumed” the ice maker assembly would be very costly. I believe this part #5989JA1005D would be everything I need and seems like a simple install. I saw a note under the description of this part which didn’t make much sense, it said: “If the icemaker is not working make sure the freezer temperature is around zero degrees Fahrenheit .If so, the icemaker or water valve could be defective.”

Anything to consider with that statement? Not even sure it is a coherent statement to be honest.

thank you,

Kyle

1. Icemaker becomes active at 5F (deactivates/turns off above that temperature). This is a reminder to verify/check that the freezer temp is correct.

2. Is it possible that the Water Valve may need replacement ?...Yes.

3. Since the IM is warped/damaged...start with that. Most icemakers fail long before reaching the 10th year.

Yeah, the water valve isn’t part of the IM assembly correct? I think it’s definitely spraying out water, but it’s clearly missing the mark. So you suggest starting with IM assembly correct? And then if water valve is defective do that after right?

I also need to replace the ice bucket with the auger since it has once again cracked at the crusher, which is about a $200 part by itself. The IM assembly is only $50-80, so I’ll probably do the IM first and make sure the problem stops before replacing the bucket yet again.

Yes...replace Water Valve only if needed.
