This venerable machine has a symptom that just started.  Start a wash cycle, fills with water, then makes a loud low pitch whining for a minute or so and then throws a 'lid'  error on the readout panel.  I think that lid is just a default error being displayed.  Opening and lowering the lid stops and starts normal operation attempts.  I took of the lower rear access panel and I can see the drive belt looks ok, and pulling on it to turn the pulleys the belt is connected to works ok.  I watched it with a headlamp and the drive belt does not move during this low pitch whining period.

Thanks in advance!

There should be a techsheet in the cabinet somewhere. Use that to get into diagnostics and see what error codes are present.

I don't see one in there.  I'll try to find one online.  I took out the water pump motor and I was able to verify that manually rotating it turns the pump mechanism ok - so the plastic splined mating area in the mechanism isn't stripped out or anything.

This online repair guide at appliancerepair.net has a troubleshooting section that talks about my issue.  Specifically at that link in Section 2.6(e) "DRIVE MOTORS, START SWITCH, AND CAPACITORS" it describes my washers symptoms and suggests the start capacitor, speed selector switch or transmission may be the problem.  Is anyone able to give some pointers on that?

Hard to say without error codes.

I found the tech sheet, the error it gives is LD which it says is long drain.  It stays full of water and doesn't drain.  I've tilted it against the wall and run the spin and drain diagnostic test.  It spins and the water pump turns, the loud low pitched whine is coming from the plastic pump mechanism that attaches to the pump motor.  I've run the test with the pump mechanism off the pump motor and the splined shaft coming out of the motor turns fine.  I've blown through all the hoses no problem, so I do not think they are clogged.

The impeller spins freely?

If so try new pump. It should have resistance and some tension when spun with a finger.
