I have a White-Westinghouse freezer model MFC05M0BW1 that was in a basement that flooded, taking on maybe 4 inches of water.  It was plugged in at the time and doesn't work now.  Is it ruined?  How do I check?  I have a multimeter and lots of tools, and tend to be pretty good at fixing things.  Thanks.

I would say yes it is ruined . Especially if it was salt water.

darren412, thank you for your reply.  It was not salt water.  There's a panel on the side of the freezer that appears to come off easily.  If you or anyone else can suggest things in there to check with a multimeter, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks again.

16345Ed, thank you for your reply.  A Google search revealed that this same freezer model was sold under the Frigidaire brand name.  I opened mine up and removed the compressor start relay, which is the only part I'm sure got wet due to its low position inside the freezer and the rust on it.  I found identical-looking parts from Sears which even have the same brand name (Embraco) as the ones I removed, so I'm going to order them and see if they fix the problem.  I realize that this is throwing parts at it, but the cost is less than 30 bucks and the compressor start relay seems to be a common culprit based on things I've read today.  I'll come back to this thread and let you know what happens.

There’s not a lot there . Thermostat, start device, and compressor. If your gonna start throwing money at the start device ? Make sure your getting 120 volts at your outlet for the power first thing. Then if you are getting 120 volts , make sure the thermostat is on the cold setting and that should be sending line voltage to your start device which is marked by an L  at the terminal connection for your start device.   if it is getting line voltage and the neutral is good then The start device is toast or the compressor is toast.  Check your outlet voltage first as I mentioned . If you don’t have a meter plug the freezer in another good outlet that you know is good which is on a separate breaker then plug the freezer in that outlet with a good extension cord . Outdoor type of cord. See if it comes back to life. Maybe you will get lucky and the problem is just in the breaker at the panel.   Good luck
