The left front radiant element on my JER8885RAS is not heating consistently. When I turn it on on high it will immediately heat up but then it shuts off and will not do anything else. Any suggestions what I should test before I buy any replacement parts

Thanks

The radiant element will cycle on and off to maintain what ever the preset heat setting is on.  Even when it is on hi.  You need to also have a flat pan not an oval shaped pan on the surface as the radiant element needs to have full contact on the bottom of the pan or pot you are using.  When using the radiant heat system oven tops you need to have a good set of pots and pans and not a cheap set of pots and pans on these models to really cook properly

If what I have previously mentioned does not work, You will either have a bad infinite switch on the console or a bad dual radiant element sensor . Each can be checked by a qualified repair person to find your bad component  but as stated unless your a qualified technician I would not attemp to repair this your self .  This oven runs on 240 volts .  “ very dangerous” if your not qualified to look at this electrical issue if indeed it turns out to be one of these parts.

Thanks Darren. I was aware of your first comment. As for the second one I have already checked the element for continuity and it checks good. Inner/outer elements both exhibit the same behavior, start heating up when the switch is turned on but then clicking sound from the switch and the elements will no longer heat up. I'm willing to bet it is probably the sensor. I will be checking the switch sometime today and hopefully have a better idea as to what part I should purchase to repair this myself.

Un fortunately your dual element will have to be replaced with the temp sensor if the sensor is bad .i believe the sensor does not come separate. Not expensive . What you can do if your qualified enough to do this is Run the unit with your meter  leads connected to the infinite switches out going L1and L2 voltage lines  that are going to the dual element in question . When the element shuts off when it should not and your still getting 240v going to the element from your infinite switch then that Will tell you your having a problem with the dual element. If it’s losing voltage and then the dual element I shutting down then that will tell you it’s coming from the switch end.   You also need to check the wiring too and make sure that’s ok also. See if this plan of attack helps you out .

The two inner infinite switches can be swapped out too chech them if they were bad but I’m not sure if you can switch the two outside infinite switches because not only are they different part #’s the elements for each switch have different wattages.  The switch is pretty easy to check   And inexpensive.

I am betting that the bimetal in the infinite switch is cutting out and it will be the infinite switch in the console. Your element and sensor are most likely alright if the hot indicator  shuts off and on when it does.
