hi guys i have a machine that stopped spining and makes a grinding noise at the spin cycle after opening it up i see the drive pulley and drive gear are not engageing with each other the shifter pushes them together but they dont mesh with each other the reason for this is that the drive shaft has play and when there is tension from the drive belt that pulls them out of alignment i took the drive pulley off and see that there is some sort of bearing/bushing that comes out that may be worn a little is this a replaceable part or does the transmision have to be changed?

In its normal state the shifter fork assembly with the red wax motor attached to it  is held in the upward position. Which releases the drive gear that controls power to the spin tube. In this mode the  power is delivered to the transmission agitator shaft.   In the spin mode the wax motor will get 120 vac  from the control and the lid lock system. Then the expansion of wax in the red wax motor forces the shifter fork down and then the drive gear is engaged down to the transmission spin tube and locks in for it to do a spin when asked.     It’s possible the wax motor in that fork support assembly is failing and may not be engaging the drive gear fully all the way down or the drive gear is stripped. That what it is sort of sounding like for the issue you are having. Without being there it’s hard to tell.  Put it in a spin cycle if the machine allows it and watch to see if the forks push the drive gear down all th way. If it goes partially all the down and does not fully engage into the belt pulley gear for the transmission then as mentioned that fork support assembly with the wax motor may need to be replaced

the shifter fork is working fine it moves the drive gear down put since they are not lining up they dont turn together i tried pushing them together manually by hand and they dont go but when i take the belt off they do go

It still sounds as though the wax motor may not be giving it that last bit of pressure when that wax arm comes out it has a lot of pressure. Hmm.   Ohm out the wax motor on the shifter fork. You should be getting 900 ohms for a reading

Also see if your getting a constant 120 Ac to the thermal actuator at the point of where your saying it stops before engaging.

i will check voltage when i go back but after i removed the tub with belt still on the pulley i was not able too get it to engage even with two hands there appears to be about a quarter inch play in the drive shaft and when i take that bearing/washer out from under the shifter and shifter spring there is even more play i was thinking this washer is worn a little allowing there to be this much play

this is my first time opening a newer washing machine so im not so familiar with these new transmissions and shifters im more used to the old motor couplings

is that washer/bearing even supposed to be able to come out

Had you checked the machine to see what error codes you may have come across before you took it all apart ?   Again  without being there and seeing what you have actually done and taken apart.  Not quite sure where your at. If there is play in the lower shaft of the transmission , replace the transmission. That is a sealed transmission with bearings in the tranny case. There should be no play at all in that transmission shaft.   Also do you remember before you took this all apart when it was Time to spin did you happen to notice if the motor had pulsed a few times in each direction to seat the drive gear all the way down to seat the drive gear for spin. I believe You mentioned you had to move the pulley manually to seat the the drive gear    The motor is supposed to pulse in both directions before the start up of the spin cycle when a spin is selected. Its possible you not only have a transmission issue but you could also have an issue with the lid lock or main control not talking to the motor.  Again that’s if you had noticed that the motor did not pulse back and forth on its own just before it is ready to spin.   If you replace the transmission make sure the lid lock is working properly and if it is then make sure the control is also telling  the motor to pulse back and forth a few times also to set the drive gear in place just before spin also.  It sounds at this point since you have said the transmission shaft  had play if that is what you definitely are seeing and know it’s the shaft that is loose , that the transmission will need to be replaced.  If you have a subscription with this site to pull up and download technical information on this machine I would suggest you do that.  Good luck ok

I did not check for error codes

The motor does pulse as if trying to seat it

A brass bearing came off the transmission shaft

If door lock is definitely good also you should be fine with just replacing the transmission only  good luck

hi darren just wanted to let you know what happened

the friend i was helping repair his machine decided he is going to replace his machine since it needs a new tub and a couple of other parts totaling about 400 dollars
