I have a new Magic Chef counter top microwave oven model HMM1611B and the glass tray does not rotate, it oscillates.    It only turns about 45 degrees of arc and then it changes the direction of rotation.   In a 30 second cooking cycle it changes direction 19 times.  This does not seem normal to me.   Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't seen that one. It could be that the power to the turntable motor is being interrupted. Check the connection and the wires. Be careful; appliances can be dangerous.

If you don't find anything obvious, buy a new one.

Thanks for the quick reply.   Since it is less than 24 hours old and if there are no additional comments that say differently than you, it will be going back to the store.  Thanks again.

The model number you have provided: HMM1611B isn't coming up as a good number, (maybe just too new).

Take a picture of the bottom of the glass tray and the coupler in the bottom to the microwave and post it to an external file hosting site and post a link here for we can see it.

I'm pretty sure that is the normal operation of your tray though.  If the glass tray has an elongated slot that a peg on the coupler on the bottom of the microwave engages in that that is the style where the coupler just has a straight peg on the outside of a circle disk, the peg engages in the slot in the glass tray and makes the tray just move side to side and slightly front to back as the tray motor turns.

I do not think this is what you are describing but here a link of the photo I took.

And here is a link to the microwave.   It is the silver version but otherwise I believe it is the same.

It just didn’t make sense that it was designed to work the way it did so I bit the bullet this afternoon and made the 46 mile round trip to exchange it for another copy of the same model.  I would have rather have tried another brand and model to be on the safe side, but none of the other models available had the foot print and the regular door handle that I wanted. Fortunately the glass tray of the second unit turns continuously in the same direction so there was definitely a problem with the first one and it is not inherent in the design.   I have no idea why the first one behaved as it did, and using Google when it first happened failed to produce any answers or even a hint that others might have had the same problem in the past.  Really strange, but all’s well that ends well.

Glad you got it taken care of, from the picture of the bottom of the turntable and the coupler it's the style that should just turn in a circle like the replacement one you got does.

Something was wrong with the turntable motor or power to the motor on our first one.

Was a bad motor they can reverse when weak
