Whirlpool Duet Washer GHW9100LW1 Knock during spin cycle

Hi All,

Our Whirlpool Duet Washer GHW9100LW1 knocks like crazy during the spin cycle.  My guess is there is a bad bearing.  There are no failure codes and the washer appears to function fine in spite of the noise.  

A couple of questions:

1)  Is this a difficult repair?  I've made simple repairs on washers and dryers in the past and recently you guys helped me with a fairly complex repair my oven too.

2) Is this an expensive repair from a reliable appliance repair company?  What is a reasonable cost for this type of repair?

 Bearing is possible. And likely but more likely is the tripod/drum support.

may need  to get it as the entire inner drum lastone i looked up was about 380 DEALER cost. Some are more some are less. 

Lift tub up and down to look for play rotate  about 120 degrees and try again

Hi LT,

I tried lifting the drum and rotating it but there was not much play in any position.  I did this with the washer fully assembled.

Do I need to take it apart?

I tried the bearing check as shown in the video and it feels fine but I found a key to our minivan hidden in the folds of the rubber seal.  Don't think that was causing any issues.

Going to keep monitoring the sound during spin cycles.

If that test was good and tight and no noise when you spin basket by hand.

Look around where the rubber seal & the front of the drum meet. Is there little flakes or shavings of rubber around there?

Look at the space between the front of the tub and the rubber boot. Is it the same all the way around? Turn the tub slowly and watch the space. Does it change as the tub is being turned? Is it closer on one side? If so does that closeness follow the tub as it is being turned?

if the spider has a broken leg the washer is going to lean to one side and the screws that hold the spider on the tub are going to rub on the outer basket I would recommend you to open the drain filter and see if their is any metal looking pieces from the spider.

Hi Lighthouse and Aall,

The space between the front of the tub and the rubber boot is very consistent all around the circumference of the tub.  It does not change when the tub is being turned.

I think 16345Ed could be right so I ordered the parts that were recommended even though I have not taken the washer apart.  I will keep you posted once I get the washer apart and the parts arrive.

Hi All,

Once the washer was apart the problem was obvious.  One of the rear shocks was broken.  Replaced that shock and the springs just because ordered them too. 

Washer is working great again!
