Several nights ago, my Whirlpool side-by-side wasn't running right.  The ice dispenser was out, as were lights in both the freezer and refrigerator.  The evaporator fan wasn't running.  After taking the back panel off, I noticed that the compressor and its fan were still running.  After checking door switches and defrost timer, I plugged it back in and the compressor and its fan were no longer running.  I pulled apart some wiring connections and reconnected, but only got the compressor to come back on once after several attempts  Any hope for this 15-year-old refrigerator?

So does the compressor run or not? I’m a bit confused.

If compressor isn’t running you need to see if there is power at compressor.

If no power at compressor try this...

Part number: WP2198202

Part number: WP2198202

if power at compressor but it doesn’t run, the problem is likely this, which unfortunately is no longer available

When I first discovered that all of the lights and the ice dispenser weren't working, and I took off the back panel, the compressor was running.  However, after trying to trouble shoot the light failures (door switches, etc.), when I plugged the fridge back in, the compressor wouldn't run.  I disconnected many of the wiring components and reconnected them, hoping to find a failure somewhere, and I was able to get the compressor to come on only once again.  It is not running now.

Would a failure with a compressor component (relay, overload) cause the lights to be out in both compartments?

Nope
