MVWX500XW2 Maytag washer hums/grinds

My washer stopped just before the final drain/spin making a sort of grinding hum. Apparently it did that all night as it was still going when I found it the next day. Only the red lid-lock light was on, none of the usual amber lights indicating cycle progress and settings.

Replaced the shift actuator. Machine appeared to start normally, but is now stalled in the same condition as before (crackly grinding hum, lid-lock light), this time earlier in the cycle.

What do I need to be looking at next?

Open the lid with nothing running. Reach in there and spin the tub by hand. If you hear grinding sound, anything but sounding really smooth spinning that tub. 

That would be the top bearing in the Gear Case.

You would probably want to consider buying another washer.

No, it spins fine. My description may be a bit misleading. It's really a humming sound, but not a smooth steady hum - not very loud either. My intuition indicates something sort of controls-related. Something preventing the process from advancing to the next cycle. Timer maybe?

Maybe a water valve humming trying to let in water, (COLD water only for rinses usually).    Check to make sure no one turned the water off at the wall or the screens in the valve are plugged with sediment.

If there is still water in the tub and it isn't draining the noise could be the hum of the drain pump not turning because something is stuck in it.

It should have came up with some kind of error after a while for either of those problems and stopped the noise and an error code displayed and/or flashing lid lock light to indicate an error.

The error codes would have to be retrieved from the control - the tech sheet that explains how to enter diagnostics and read the error codes is in a plastic bag glued to the inside top left front of cabinet.

You need to check for error codes that may have arose from the problem.    As budget mentioned the tech sheet will be located under the top and stuck on the inside of the upper front panel.  If your arms are long enough , when you tip the machine back while carefully watching all the hoses as to not break anything,  while you are checking the bottom underside you can reach up and get the tech sheet out from the upper front part of the inside of the front panel.  so check underneath on the bottom of the gear case where you replaced the actuator. you may want to inspect the workings and the pulley with the belt on it.. look for any signs of wobbling with the pulley  for the gear case or something loose and out of place.    alot of times that pulley will come loose and strip at the splines.  you may only need to re tighten the self locking nut that holds on the pulley.  there is also a splutch kit in there above the belt pulley that can get stripped and make noises too.
