Maytag Gas Dryer - Gas won't light or stay lit

Recommended Posts

I have a Maytag gas dryer, model MDG6200AWW. I'm not sure how old it is but I'd guess 15 years, maybe older.

It's having a problem that appears related to igniting the gas and/or keeping it lit. The dyer powers on without any issues, the igniter gets hot but the gas either doesn't light, or if it does will goes out after 2-7 minutes. If the dryer is running and it goes out, the igniter will get hot about every 1:30 but the gas won't re-ignite - or at least it doesn't after 10 minutes (that's the longest I've observed it).

I've test the thermal fuse and the gas valve coils and both appear to be functioning. I've also tried unplugging the exhaust to see if a clog was causing the issue.

Any other ideas or things I can try?

Give replacing the gas valve coils a shot. They are cheap enough.

Even though I tested them with a multi-meter and they appear to be working fine?

Yep.

I see I can buy them on amazon, but is that something that a Home Depot would have in stock. I don't see it on their website but I'd rather go out and buy it today than wait for amazon to deliver it.

Wife wouldn't be happy if I burned two days waiting for it only to find out it didn't fix anything.

Blame it on me.

I replaced the coils and it appears to be working! Thanks for the help.

When I tested it last night after replacing the coils, the gas stayed lit for 10 straight minutes. I believe it's supposed to cycle on and off so that had me a little worried. Once I closed the dryer back up, it sounds like the gas is cycling on and off. Is there any way to test that and make sure while the front panel is on?

Take temp readings where the air exits the dryer vent.

Watch the temp go up, then watch it go back down. Watch the temp go up, and watch it come back down.

Glad your wife is not mad at me or you.
