DE410 push to start switch substitution?

Recommended Posts

Caveat: I can turn a screwdriver. My understanding of electricity is almost nonexistent.

I have a maytag DE410 dryer. I believe the push to start switch is bad. Apparently the 350211 part is no longer available. eBay Maytag NOS listings were a bit under $50.

I took the part to a local appliance parts store. They said it was not bad and would not discuss replacement options with me.

I ordered an old appliance take out from an eBay seller which I should have in another day or two. In the event that also turns out to be bad, I need to improve my situation understanding so I can continue working with an effective repair.

The 350211 switch I have (and the ebay listings) show CHerry  E65-06D 16 amp. A 2 terminal snap into a mounting plate switch. It has a square button to fit the square hole on the dryer console.

There are also listings for a Cherry limit switch and Cherry dryer door switches which just have a small round push button. They are also 2 terminal 16 amp E65-*** snap into a mounting plate switches.

Can I substitute a Cherry E65-*** 16 amp door switch for a Cherry E65-*** 16 amp push to start switch on a DE410 dryer?

Thank you.

You may want to check your door switch . The push to start switch very seldom goes bad.

305211  this is the proper number. It still shows available at trible’s and at a1 appliance parts , but I still think it may be your door switch instead.

Out of Stock and 7-10 day special order are a bit iffy on availability.

Don’t want to mess your new post up , i just assumed the dryer wasn’t starting, everybody comes into my shop holding their push to start switch in their hand wanting to buy one cause ( the dryer will not start ) . I check the switch and 99% of the time it is good ,and i try to direct them to one of the more likely causes. But if your local appliance parts store checked yours and said it was good , and you still want one then the 306533 should work just fine , knock yourself out . Maybe your the 1%

Well, it is definitely not the door switch. When I opened the door the dryer stopped. When I closed the door the dryer started. And there is the problem, it did not wait for me to push the push to start switch for it to start. I tried several times that night and once the next morning with the same results. (when the dryer was plugged in) Every time I closed the door, the dryer immediately started (or buzzed, depending on the timer setting).

I have a Harbor Freight tester I don't know how to use. I took the switch out and attempted to check it for continuity and thought it was bad. (Unfortunately later on when I attempted to duplicate the testing results of the parts store, I discovered I had not used the tester correctly. I had it on the wrong 200 number setting. I know how to do it now so I can confirm the switch's badness the next time it fails.)

Since I thought the switch was bad, I pried on it for awhile with a screwdriver, trying to get the knob off so I would be able to put it on another switch. After I did all the looking online and found the DE410 switch was obsolete, I went to this parts store and hoped they would talk to me about a substitute based on the Cherry switch information on the side. They tested it and said it was good. The man I took to be the owner of the parts store stood there for several minutes and ran DE410 wiring patterns through his head and then told me the problem had to be in a switch (I forget the name) on the motor.

When I timidly inquired if the push to start switch could have an intermittent failure, he just looked at me and said the problem was not in the push to start switch and he would not discuss any replacement options with me. So with no electrical knowledge at all, I have spent what seems like hours looking at parts diagrams and eBay pictures trying to figure out the options I might have for replacement so I can have something here for the next time it fails.

When I got the part home, I spent a long time looking at the tester's manual and the tester, trying to duplicate the result at the parts store. I finally discovered that I was using the wrong end of the rotary dial to make setting selections and got a good continuity test like the store did. So I put the part back in the dryer and it works fine at the moment. eBay has some pictures of clear 306533 switches that show a knob stem surrounded by a coil compression spring. Assuming my DE410 switch is like that inside, I suspect something is going on with the spring breaking down and the switch got stuck in the closed position and then all the upward prying I did on the knob released it.

I did something to the timer about a month ago that I think caused that switch to temporarily fail then. I don't know what I did tnen or how it fixed itself, but I expect I did something to this switch then and it will completely fail before too long.

I just got the used switch I ordered from eBay, I don't much like the feel-- It feels very stiff and "clicky" compared to our current one. I'm going to have to put it in the dryer for awhile to test it but I am still being very tempted to order one of the 306533's brand new.

(I don't see how to edit my previous post.)

The dryer was made in 1983. We have owned it for 21 years. My wife has opened and closed the door for every permanent press shirt. So both the door switch and the start switch have had a lot of use.

Ok, now that we know what is going on with the dryer it makes sense now. You are one of the very few that actually may need one. I just have sooooooo many to want one cause their dryer will not start. What you have done may have fixed it. That switch is very simple , it should only read ohms on your meter when the button is pushed, should have no reading at all when not pushed, a lot of the time they work fine after taking it out and cleaning it up , very common to get that buildup of lint and stuff that can hold the switch down . Test the switch you got from eBay to make sure it test the way I said , if it does I would keep it just in case .

It's a Harbor Freight free with coupon type meter. The meter shows a 1 when the switch is not pushed and settles around .04-.08 when the switch is pushed. I polished the top side of the terminals with a dremel brush and will set the switch aside in case I need it in the future. Thanks.

Now get to evaluate further. Dryer failed again today. Put in eBay used replacement and buzzing problem stopped. The switch pole under the button is rather wobbly, but the switch will serve for evaluation right now.
