Whirlpool WRX735SDBMOO. I am referring to solenoid operated water inlet valves that fridges come with. This fridge has a single valve at the back, near the compressor, where the incoming water line hooks up and a dual valve inside the fridge, behind the liner and below the water filter. I assume the dual valve controls the water to the icemaker and the cold water dispenser.

So why the need for the single valve at the back? Is it for extra insurance against leaks, in case of valve failure? The water reservoir is just a long length of poly tubing wound up behind the liner. Are they concerned about the tubing developing leaks?

Yep, just there for redundancy. The isolation valve is powered through a "diode pack" when either the IM or Disp. valve (both contained in dual valve) is energized.
