Lg French Door Refrigerator Model lmx25964ST Freezer Growing Ice in upper right Corner

Seen this several times now where the evaporator is completely clear but where the refrigerant lines enter the freezer a large block of ice forms. Mind you that the fresh food compartment is staying cool. The evap in this case do not frost across the evaporator. Do we have a refrigerant leak?

Hi Bow hunter .  what are the symptoms or issues you are having that is making you look at the evaporator in the freezer section to begin with .  some times that is from normal ice build up in time when the defrost cycle is not melting the frost and ice that builds up in that upper right hand corner before the defrost cycle has been told to stop.  Look at the evaporator thermistor and if its not facing the front and up as high as it can go on the exact same line, I would carefully  move it up on the same exact line and face it forward .  Get yourself a good temperture gauge and  monitor the freezer and freshfood sections for any constant drop in temperatures. if it is slowly dropping then you might have an issue.  Chances are your just fine since it is cooling and freezing properly like you mentioned and that most likely means the evaporator fan is running properly also.  You are correct in wondering if since you see a ball of ice that it could be a restriction at  the line right there  but usually you would of had a significant drop in temperature in that freezer section and everything would have melted and the ice production would of stopped.  you can melt that ball of ice with a hair dryer but a steamer would be much quicker and safer.  This way the ball of ice does not continue to grow and block the operation of the evaporator fan or cause the back cover to open up and have gaps in the future.

The evaporator doesn’t have a frost line. It seems that the refrigerant isn’t reaching that far.

no light frost on the evaporator from top to bottom  ??    if there is only half or none at all of the frost coverage on the evaporator , then you definately are having an issue with a loss of refrigerant .  Most likely a restriction in the evaporator line where the ball of ice is.

Little to no frost line.

whats the temperature of the condenser coils ?

Posted

your condensor temperature should run about 30 degrees above the ambient temperature in the room.   a reading  considerably lower than that would mean you definately have an abnormal situation with your sealed system.

I didn’t take a reading there, but that is great advise
