GE Profile refrigerator cooling intermittently

I have a bottom freezer GE profile counter depth refrigerator.  Everything will be fine and out of the blue I will come home and everything is defrosted in freezer and fridge is warm.  I have not found info on intermittent problems. The main board has already been replaced so its not that.. The compressor has felt very hot at times and very cold at times.  Do inverters or compressors work intermittently if bad or is there perhaps something else I can check?  ( Before yesterday I didn't even know how to identify the compressor however my husband and I have VERY  limited resources so we need to figure this out ourselves without wasting alot of money.) While he has never done any type of appliance repair, he has experience  with electrical  so he has testers and can certainly follow clear instructions of what to check.
