Amana ALW88OQAC top load washer bad bearing?

Recommended Posts

I think the bearing is bad. This is what happened: When I first started diagnosing the problem, neither the agitator nor drum would spin. I then gave the agitator a firm clock-wise twist. I felt it come loose. Now, the drum spins and agitator does its thing, however, I see fine droplets of water falling when looking underneath the drum, and the spin cycle is very load.

I am assuming this is a bad bearing. Is this worth fixing? I am guessing the washer is at least 12 years old.

Thanks!

Yes, likely a bearing and tub seal replacement is in order. This is a pretty big job and requires some specialty tools. I checked a few suppliers for the service kit R9900457. Sadly it loooks like the kit is no longer available.

Thanks for the response. Looks like the end of the road. 😀

Wow!  Funny that this thread pops up on the first page.

Back in 2009, I did that same repair job with the help of this forum - so long ago that my thread doesn't even exist any more!
Now, after a decade of that repair holding up, it's leaking again from SOMEwhere.  I haven't yet disassembled it to see if it's from the tub seal again.
If the part is discontinued, I hope it's not from that same bearing seal.

Note:  When I did this job, I made my own wrench-tool with a piece of MDF and a jigsaw.  It was crude and ugly, but it worked just fine for one disassembly and reassembly.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I think the bad bearing resulted in not only a leak, but a loud howling/roaring noise during the spin cycle.
Maybe it's just the drain pump, or if I'm super lucky it'll be a drain hose that's loose or cracked.

a few of these kits listed on E-Bay. including 1 from me. I can't find the instruction sheet that some people are looking for # 16021707.

Hopefully after 3 years they’ve resolved their issue…
