Generic Gas Oven Glowbar Question

Is the glowbar (ignitor) in a gas oven suppose to be on ALL the time, like even when the oven is not being used and knob is off?  And if not....what could cause the glowbar to be constantly active?

Generically speaking, the igniter is on all the time during use. It needs to pull the correct amount of amperage to keep the gas safety valve open. This can vary model to model, but is typically 3.2-3.6 amps. If it is glowing while the knob is off then you have a short somewhere. The reason can vary depending on the way the burner switches are configured. A model number would really help us out in nailing this down

No. It's broken.

The ignitor is only supposed to glow when the thermostat or controller is calling for heat.

Can't tell you "why" without a model number.

I can't find a tag anywhere. I'm reluctant to pull it from the wall.  80s model Magic Chef is all I know.  The knob (thermostat) is a 2 pole. Has 1 wire going to relay where it receives power from. Other wire travels down into oven to power glowbar and saftey valve.  When knob is off, both wires read hot current according to my voltage pen.  So I think if it is running power through this when off it's safe to say the thermostat is somehow shorted?? If the short was anywhere else the knob (thermostat) would still stop the current at itself until turned on?? 7404P098-60 is the thermostat model if that helps.  Appreciate the input.  It helps narrow down possibilities

Unplug the range and remove one of the wires from the oven t-stat then check across the oven t-stat terminals when it is in the OFF position - if you get continuity you know the t-stat is bad.

Also with the one wire still off the t-stat and safely away from every thing so it won't short/ground out, plug the range back in and see if the oven stays off.

you can be given plenty of guesses as to what or where your problem may lie but you need to be prepared to supply the model and serial # of the appliance in question or any other appliance in question in the forum before you can actually get an educated answer and solution.  I see you mentioned you could not find the model and serial # of the stove . Assuming this is a kitchen gas stove ??  1)  try looking around the oven door somewhere when the door is fully opened   2) look up underneath the conrol panel while the oven door is open also  3) if you have a lower pots and pans drawer , open that drawer up.  Then look to the left and right side of the stove where the left and right front legs are .  4) sometimes the model number can be on a sticker or metal tag , under the top of the stove .   If you find it , post back here with the number of the stove so you can be helped

I'll save you the trouble as the part number you provided is a discontinued part and I don't see a manufacturer replacement option.
