Returning guest presenter Aaron Wilson is back for another exciting discussion. This time, we'll be talking about...
The Science of CYA: How to Keep the Customer Safe, Document Your Work, and Not Get Sued
We take on a lot of liability as appliance repair techs, and that can get us into sticky situations whether we've done anything wrong or not. Aaron will be teaching us all about how to navigate this side of the trade.
We'll start by going over a tragic, real-world case study where a sloppy installation had lethal results, analyzing exactly how the installer's negligence caused this. From there, our scope will expand to what kind of safety precautions we should implement in our own work, both for the customer's sake and for our own.
But even if you do everything perfectly, there's still the famous "technician witch hunt." Well, we'll also talk about how to deal with that by thoroughly documenting your work and putting yourself beyond legal reproach.
A little about our guest, Aaron Wilson:
Aaron has been in the appliance repair trade for about 15 years, starting out by doing installations before moving on to bigger and better things. He worked for C&W Services as a Sub-Zero authorized servicer for a time and thereafter joined Mr. Appliance of Highland Park in the Dallas area, where he worked for years as the lead technician and field service manager. These days, he's making sure that all the appliances of everyone's favorite fried chicken place are in tip-top shape as the Quality and Performance Consultant for the southwest branch of Chick-fil-A. In addition, he has taught many classes on refrigeration repair and advanced diagnostics, during which time he also developed training material for the soft skills side of things, which he is delighted to share with you. On top of all that he's a certified graduate of the Master Samurai Tech Academy, so he knows his stuff!

So I've been in the HVAC service business for 25+ years, but this fridge is throwing me for a loop. The refrigerator cools fine, the top Ice maker in the freezer compartment work fine, but the freezer isn't cooling. It is staying around 50 degrees regardless of where temp is set. I removed the evaporator panel in the freezer and the coil is barely cool, it's not froze up, freezer fan is working fine. There is a 40C code that flashes sometimes after I've trying resetting power etc. This code appears top have something to do with the ice maker, don't believe this is causing freezer issue. Condenser coil is clean, I am stumped currently. Thanks in advance for any help. I've browsed some service manuals online, but nothing has made sense thus far. The problem literally started overnight

Does your refrigerator have the 3 way valve option?

Posted

The forced mode might help here. Press and hold Freezer and Lighting buttons for for 8 seconds. Let go when display goes blank. Push any button once and FF should appear and blink along with an alarm beeping that will drive you crazy. In this mode compressor should run and both evaporators should flood with refrigerant. To exit, unplug the unit for a couple of minutes.

I'm not sure, how would I tell?

It will be located in the unit compartment in the back and looks like this:

This did not help either

when you say the fridge side is cooling fine what does that mean?  is it at 35 to 40?  only reason I ask.. i have seen the samsung's with the same complaint.  freezer not cooling but the fridge is fine only to find out the fridge was reading about 45ish along with the freezer and the whole problem was a low charge and obviously a leak somewhere.. yea the stuff in the fridge section was cool to the touch but not working as it was supposed to.

The fridge is operating at 38 degrees, which is where it's set. It will go lower if I adjust temp. The freezer section is running 50 degrees.

this is the routing of the freon thru the system.  just isn't much there between the fridge evap and the freezer evap.  At this point, if you haven't done so already, I would put the gauges on it and see what your pressures are.

Kinda what I am thinking, it's very confusing that the fridge is cooling perfectly and the freezer basically not at all. I plan to get some access fittings tomorrow and check pressures

It is also confusing that the problem literally happened overnight. The fridge had a 40C code on the display one morning, reset that and assumed it was due to the temp being high in the freezer and the freezer hasn't worked right since

This is an icemaker fan error - according to the manual.

Before you tap the system, check the compressor inverter board for error codes ( flashing led).

The led light was solid, no flashing

Having the same issue with my French door refrigerator,  top is working fine even the ice at the top is find,   Freezer is not cooling. Have read the thread above and none of those items are the issue.

Need help figuring out the problem with this Samsung rf28hfedtww.  Have pulled the evaporator fan and checked it, is working fine. Have vacuumed the coils in the back of the fridge this unit has worked well for close to 5 years and just started being a problem a week ago.

Was not able to locate the compressor inverter board where is that located?

What about checking the freezer door switch? Does depressing the switch turn off the light and is supposed to be able to start the compressor?  If the switch is stuck open the freezer won't function properly.

Did that and also confirmed when he door was off when the tracks go the back the light goes out and the evaporator van starts running.
