Whirlpool Washer GSX9750PW1--Removing Agitator CAM

Recommended Posts

FYI, I acquired this washer second-hand last March after I failed to repair the transmission of the Kenmore washer I posted about previously.

I recently noticed that the agitation was lacking while washing a large load. Further investigation reveals that the Agitator Dogs are bad enough to allow some intermittent slipping between the upper and lower agitator parts.

I pulled the dogs I had installed in the Kenmore that were still "good as new" but haven't been able to get them installed in the GSX9750PW1 because the CAM is jammed in the agitator and I can't seem to get it separated. I have removed the agitator from the machine and need guidance in getting it apart so that I can replace the dogs.

It may be so hard to get apart because the Barrier Cap was missing when I pulled the top cap off. I noticed some moisture at the bolt head when I removed it. I would like to transfer the cap from the Kenmore (model 110.20932991) but it seems a little narrow. Could you please confirm that this part is interchangeable between these two models? I have a Repair Parts List for the Whirlpool, but have been unable to find a comparable list for the Kenmore.

Thanks for any help.

I don’t think your caps are interchangeable just order proper one they aren’t too expensive.

The inner barrier cap on both should be the same, they both use the same gasket.  The Kenmore one doesn't list just the barrier cap, it comes as a kit with fabric softener dispenser.

To get the auger and dogs off the agitator, put the agitator on the floor and stand on both sides and yank up really hard on the auger and the cam and dogs should pop loose.

EDITED: the above won't work on this one - they are put together in a way that makes them much harder to get the cam to pop loose.  They have four tabs that are kind of melted to the cam, unlike the Kenmore one that only have two press fitted tabs.  Usually have to use a razor knife and cut parts of the melted tabs off and pry the holes open a little with a thin straight screwdriver then once the tabs melted edges are remove yank hard on the auger while holding the agitator down with your feet.

Or the easier way, just swap the complete agitator and auger assembly from the Kenmore with all the good parts into the Whirlpool.  As long as the fabric softener dispenser doesn't hit the washer lid you should be OK.

Thank you both for your replies. I would have been back sooner, but didn't receive email alerts despite asking for them.

The video was somewhat helpful, but didn't address the fact that the CAM was jammed. I see now that I should have emphasized that in the title. Sorry about that.

I had tried standing on the agitator and pulling up on the upper part before posting, but was afraid of using too much force precisely because I was seeing these melted tabs on the top of the CAM. I was even thinking that the wrong part had been forced into place, which, in conjunction with the missing inner cap, at least seemed plausible to me.

Anyway, I tried the stand and pull method again last night with extra force and it broke free. Turns out the dogs were worn, but not as much as I expected. It looks like the Thrust Spacer might also be worn out, although it appears intact.

Regarding the cap question, I found "PART NO. 8283351" stamped on the Kenmore cap which didn't turn up a substitute number when I searched for it. The inner diameter of the two upper agitators are different, so I don't think this transfer works.

Ultimately, I like Willie's idea to swap the entire agitator best and will try that later today. Thanks again for the idea.

Okay, I swapped out the agitators, everything from above the spanner nut, and it fits fine. Am doing a load of laundry as I type and the agitation is very strong. Thank you very much, Willie.

@MarkH  You should write the Kenmore model number with a Sharpie or other permanent inside the console area somewhere so that you will have it if you ever want to order parts for the Kenmore agitator.
