Possible to be the chopper blades on the wash pump may have something stuck in them.

When the dishwasher starts to make funny noises or working load it is usually because there are debris caught in the draining pump, although a problem with the motor is not an exception.

Drain Pump: The drain pump needs to be checked for debris. If its clean and noisy it needs to be replaced.
Circulation Pump: Bearings inside the circulation pump will wear out over time and can cause a load to groan while the dishwasher operates.

I found this at:  https://www.electrafixbc.ca/appliances/dishwasher.html

Either pump as mentioned above because some units run pump for a short time before starting actual cycle. Or your water valve since it’s usually the first load activated when started.

Unit has to fill all the way before circulation motor comes on so I doubt circ motor issue.

The dishwasher stopped making the loud noise and now makes a low buzzing sound. It does fill up with water and it does drain the water (although it keeps coming out of the air gap on top of the sink) but I don’t hear the water being sprayed around during the cycle just the low buzzing sound. So maybe it is the circulation pump? This dishwasher is at about 14 years old.
