Tappan Gas Stove model 32-2757-10/01 broiler will not light

Greetings - I have a older Tappan gas stove and the broiler will not light. The oven and top burners work fine. This is an older stove, and the broiler has its own igniter and burner. The igniter is electric and is supposed to draw about 3.5 amps. I checked the amp draw with a clamp on meter and it is correct. I took the igniter out and hooked it up to a line cord and ran it on the workbench. The igniter glows bright orange and tugging on the wires does nothing, so, the connections and wiring seem good.

When you turn the oven control to BROIL, the igniter glows brightly for about a minute, but no light. I got a barbecue lighter and put the flame right up to the broiler while the igniter was glowing. No light. Somehow, I am not getting any gas to the broiler, even though the igniter is working OK. This is odd because the top burners and oven work fine.

My wife really likes this stove , so, replacement is not an option. Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you hardly even used the broil take the spud off and clean it. Gets clogged with grease from baking.

Vance R - YOU NAILED IT. The spud was clogged with a varnish like residue. My wife thinks she bought the stove around 1985 and she bakes a lot. I guess all those years of vaporized cooking oil and butter condensed on everything.

Thanks Doctor Phil - You may have saved my marriage 🙂
