40ish (?) year old kenmore washer basket is cockeyed and bangs during spin, also some water ends up outside basket during fill, what should I look for first? I have done repairs to this many times so I know how to open it up, just wondering what is the likely cause so I can focus my time. TIA

did some more googling, likely an issue with counterbalance spring? if it's in the left rear that would explain the basket cockeyed to the forward/right

Yep. Depending on condition I’ve seen place On frame where springs attach rusted out. You’ll need to inspect all those springs. I think 3 of them.

you may have to drill a new hole in the frame just to the side of the old one .  and install new counterbalance spring,  good ol' washer

Sorry I forgot to reply to this. It was the counterbalance spring, it was broken, hole was intact. $5 for a new spring at at local mom-n-pop appliance repair and I'm back in business. Still going strong, they don't make them like they used to!
