Kenmore side by side 253.56943600 freezer not below 25

In december 2019, the refrigerator side got so cold, it froze and busted several cans of coke. (mess everywhere)

A few weeks ago, I noticed the freezer was not freezing new items inside, but it would keep already frozen stuff frozen.

Put temp gun inside-- freezer is sitting around 25 degrees with setting on coldest. Fridge is around 45 with setting ar 3/9 (turned it way down since it exploded those cans)

Today I took things apart. both evaporator and condenser fans are running. Condenser coils are clean, evaporator had some frost on maybe the top 4 inches or so and the rest was bare metal.

I unplugged it for a few hours just to check that it wasn't a defrosting issue. Plugged it back in and it has been running nonstop for almost 7 hours now and got back down to 25 and no lower. Compressor is very warm, but not so hot I can't leave my hand on it.

Any thoughts or ideas to check would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry to tell you this, but it's time to go shopping for a new refrigerator.

That frost pattern on the evaporator is an indication of a sealed system problem = Low on Freon/R134A coolant.  To have a professional find leak/repair/recharge the system would most likely cost you over $400-$500 - maybe you think it's worth it and want to call around your area and see if you can get some basic non-binding quotes over the phone to decide if you want to have someone come out and look at it.
