Can not release fridge water filter

I have a whirpool gold side by side with the water filter in the grill at the bottom of the freezer. REplaced the filter many many times over the years. This time the button that releases the filter will not depress at all. I have tried pushing the filter in some more and have tried (gently) prying the filter out. Nothing changes. I even used a tool to press really hard on the button to no avail. Suggestions?
