Kenmore 110.47512600 front-load washer: loud banging and weak spin

Recommended Posts

This is a Kenmore 110.47512600 front-loading HE 2Plus washer, roughly ten years old.

For many years it has had a loud banging while spinning with any heavy load, even if well balanced.  VERY loud.  But it worked fine, just made a racket.  It hasn't gotten worse it all these years,

Recently it has failed to spin when washing a single heavy item like a rug.  Sometimes it makes groaning noises, but mostly not.

I opened up the back and the belt does have some fine cracking, but doesn't look badly worn.

I see no evidence of broken or loose weights or shock absorbers.  I don't know how to evaluate if a shock absorber is worn out.

If I shake the drum, occasionally I can get it to make the bang, albeit more quietly.  It seems to come from inside the drum.

Even though the banging is rather horrifying, I can live with it.  But I need the washer to spin.

Should I just replace the belt?

Thank you kindly.

Update:  my GF really wants the banging fixed 🙂

Update 2:  I watched a video about evaluating drum bearings, and I think the bearings are fine.  No groaning sound when I spin the drum, and when I try to move the inner drum, it seems to be completely tight to the outer drum.
