Amana LWA40AW2 washing machine - no spin

Recommended Posts

Hi all and thanks in advance.

I'm scratching my head about an Amana washing machine. Model LWA40AW2. Bought it used, but it's been working like a champ. Today, it is refusing to spin out. Any troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

The tub spins when empty, but when does not when any amount of clothing is inside.

Sounds like the belt might be slipping.

Check belt tension and idler pulley.

If there is a part number on the existing belt make sure its correct.

These washers don't have a clutch, so they rely on just the right amount of belt slippage to ramp up to speed.

But too much slippage and they won't spin right.

It could also cause the brake pads to not disengage properly.

Only other thing I can think of is the drive pulley (the large one) could be worn and not disengaging the brake pads.

Look at these diagrams so you can see the mechanical breakdowns and parts.

Is water draining on its own?

Posted (edited)

I get this compliant a lot, as all techs do.

Customer: “My Washer isn’t spinning out.”

Me: “is there still water in the tub?”

Customer: “yes”

Me: “Oh, you don’t have a spin problem you have a drain issue.”

I then generally remove a sock or something from pump

Thanks for the tip. Yes, it drains just fine. But the clothes are still sopping wet, and not flung against the sides of the tube as they would be if the washer spun out properly.

When I pulled it apart, the belt had come off the idler pulley. Parts ordered!
