Kenmore washer 110.22902100 question about inner tub

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have removed and separated the inner tub from outer.  The inner tub has a little water sloshing in it.  That should not be, correct?  Turned it multiple directions and I can't get it out.

The shaft it was sitting on had a lot of people hair+cat hair +soap residue on it so when I flipped over the tub (immediately noticeable rust) I gently took a screwdriver to touch the sides and see if there was a buildup of hair there too.  I found several holes that seemed a little irregular so maybe they are rusted through spots?   I took a pic, it's not the greatest but shows where the screwdriver easy went through a hole. https://imgur.com/a/aBDIvcl

The problem I have been trying to solve that has had me taking this otherwise perfectly working washer apart is the persistent but faint smell of mildew. I can wash clothes in hot water with several cups of vinegar and remove and promptly (like within minutes of the wash cycle ending) put in the dryer or even in the sun and it smells like mildew as soon as it's damp again. ain.  I've tried all the washer cleaners like afresh, etc, no dice.  So I wanted to see how much grey gunk and hair was stuck between the tubs.  The other plastic wasn't too bad and is now sparkling, I went to tackle the dried hair and gunk at the high water line on the inside tub but moving it to get started I heard all the sloshing. I'm wondering if there are holes that shouldn't be but are because of rust and water has gotten in somewhere its not supposed to.

I see what a new inner tub costs 🤢 $392!) and know it's more than a new refurb of the 90 series, but like, this washer has been so good to me, other than the toddler socks that ruined the previous washer pump, this one has been way less maintenance than my last 2 90 series combined. The only thing I can think of tonight was trying to see if any refurb repair guys posting on Craigslist might be willing and able to sell me a used drum in better shape.  Or maybe I've got this all overblown and none of this has anything to do with what I'm trying to fix and the rust is NBD.

The water you sloshing around is in the balance ring on the top of the tub - don't remove it or you will have to replace the spin basket for sure.

The basket does look in pretty bad shape but you might be able to get a little more use out of it.

You have the basket out, so clean all the scum off the sides and bottom of the plastic outer main tub and wash the spin basket down.

Don't know if you really should try to get the basket drive block out of the spin basket or not - doing so may disrupt more rust and the main tub shaft tower my fall apart if it is rusted to badly, (the hole where you screw driver went thru is rust out and if you keep scrapping and breaking all the rust away it might end up a goner if it isn't already).

This washer is worth the money to repair, especially if you can find a used spin basket that is in good shape - even if you ended up spending $400 for the new basket after shipping you will have a  machine that will be much better and probably last longer then any of the new junk on the market now days.

If the $392 price was on the www.searspartsdirect.com site you can use the coupon code PARTS on check out and get 10% off, ($39).  Also usually Sears only charges their top shipping charge of $12.99 or something like that on expensive items - most other places that you order a large item like a washer tub or spin basket they charge an oversized parts charge of $75 plus regular shipping charges.

EDITED TO ADD: Just looked up at https://www.searspartsdirect.com/product/25cz2ab5t6-0026-110/id-8526016

It is only $206.25 - (Less 10% with discount code -$20.63) + $12.99 shipping.  It does show as back order currently.

Looks like the $392 is from Appliance Parts Pros - which also shows currently out of stock

Part number: W10389328

Part number: W10389328

I did a parts search and this basket is still available at a few different suppliers but all show factory stock as ZERO - and Sears is really bad about things like this, even things they say are in stock sometimes you wait a week or two then they come back and tell you the part is no longer available.

Here's a source for one at a very reasonable price but shipping could be high:
