Returning guest presenter Aaron Wilson is back for another exciting discussion. This time, we'll be talking about...
The Science of CYA: How to Keep the Customer Safe, Document Your Work, and Not Get Sued
We take on a lot of liability as appliance repair techs, and that can get us into sticky situations whether we've done anything wrong or not. Aaron will be teaching us all about how to navigate this side of the trade.
We'll start by going over a tragic, real-world case study where a sloppy installation had lethal results, analyzing exactly how the installer's negligence caused this. From there, our scope will expand to what kind of safety precautions we should implement in our own work, both for the customer's sake and for our own.
But even if you do everything perfectly, there's still the famous "technician witch hunt." Well, we'll also talk about how to deal with that by thoroughly documenting your work and putting yourself beyond legal reproach.
A little about our guest, Aaron Wilson:
Aaron has been in the appliance repair trade for about 15 years, starting out by doing installations before moving on to bigger and better things. He worked for C&W Services as a Sub-Zero authorized servicer for a time and thereafter joined Mr. Appliance of Highland Park in the Dallas area, where he worked for years as the lead technician and field service manager. These days, he's making sure that all the appliances of everyone's favorite fried chicken place are in tip-top shape as the Quality and Performance Consultant for the southwest branch of Chick-fil-A. In addition, he has taught many classes on refrigeration repair and advanced diagnostics, during which time he also developed training material for the soft skills side of things, which he is delighted to share with you. On top of all that he's a certified graduate of the Master Samurai Tech Academy, so he knows his stuff!

Kitchenaid Gas Dryer Not Heating - KGYS977EQ0

I get a flame for about 10 seconds or so, then nothing.  No more heat for the rest of the cycle.

Ignitor = good.  Glows nicely and starts the flame.

Flame Sensor = good, I guess.  Ignitor shuts down as soon as the flame catches.

Thermal Fuse = good.

Thermistor = good, maybe (ohms about 7k - chart says that's for 90 degrees, which it ain't in my house.  Should be closer to 12k)

Hi Limit Thermostat = good (not shorted, at least)

Gas Valve Coils = good.  Both pretty much spot on.

Worked fine for 23 years.  Not sure why it is getting fussy now.

Also, have no idea how to get the belt idler thingie back on - but we aren't there yet.

Thoughts anyone?

If you have good airflow the odds on bet would be the gas valve coils breaking down under load.

Yep as Vance said these like to fail once they heat up. Testing them cold is inconclusive that they are good.

Roger that.  I'll order up a new set and we will see what happens.

Thank you kindly for both replies!

All-y'all be rockstars.

Bride reports dryer works better than new.  Coils were the trick, which I never would have guessed on my own.  Replace the thermostat too, for just a few tenge more - new one ohmed out at 9k instead of 7k, and Lovely Bride notices extra heat and is very pleased.

Getting the drum back on was a two man job, but just a few minutes.

Found the receipt for this precious posession.  $2,000 in 1997.  I ain't letting it go for nothing.  They don't make 'em like that any more.  Very sad I let said bride talk me into replacing the matching washer, but that water is long over the bridge.

Yep, rockstars y'all are.

Case closed on this one with a very happy ending!
