It could easily be an undocumented factory modification. I don't think anybody else would bother.

Yup. I decided to purchase a set of 5 for $40 (These things are very expensive, most places sell them for around $20 each!)

I figured if the fan ever craps out again it's better to have the insurance policy installed.
