Agitator shaft keeps popping out .....

I thought I replaced the collar that holds it in ......like 4 months ago...I did replace the collar - although the installation didn't seem like it really holds the agitator shaft in..

now the agitator is popping out again...

Or..... is there a clip holding the shaft in down near the transmission?.........I'm supposing I have the newer model and there is no spring clip down below.....mainly because when I took everything apart...I didn't see a spring clip.

Any ideas

WP22002340.   Is this the part you put on?
You can put the metal clip on but you will have to get into the transmission, you may have to get into the transmission and change the oil Anyways because when the shaft floats up water can get into the transmission.

@evaappliance If this is the newer model, (Serial# starting with 22 or higher), that takes the WP22002340 Agitator Shaft Retainer then the metal retainer clip inside the transmission can't be used - it uses a different agitator shaft that has the notch at the lower end of the shaft to accept the spring clip.

The agitator shaft that uses the WP22002340 upper external nylon retainer clip, has no lower notch and has the groove/lip at top of shaft to accept nylon external retain clip

Part number: WP6-2168983

Part number: WP6-2168983

Here's the shaft on models prior to serial numbers starting with 22, doesn't have the lip at the top end of shaft for nylon external retainer clip and has the notch for the internal spring retain clip

Part number: 6-2097820

Part number: 6-2097820

@larryfowler If you have already replaced the upper external nylon agitator retain clip and it has already failed again, you need to inspect the groove/lip on the agitator shaft and make sure it isn't worn off or damaged in any way.

Willie...you are the man!

can that shaft (Part number: WP6-2168983) be put in backwards?

I'm guessing the grooved end is the top end that fits  into the agitator...?

Willie!!...you da man. Thank you so much for your help......I just needed that little clue you provided...........It's the same thing with computers.....sometimes you just need a little clue to make the computer work correctly.

I had the shaft in backwards .....now it locks!

#2 - I did a big thing where I took the  Maytag LAT9416AAE washing machine apart to figure out why the shaft was popping out ...took me like 5 days!...hahhaaha...,.......now......it spins but it doesn't drain so well....

....I remember there was some fluffy thing that I washed...maybe a pillow ...and it came apart....maybe the fluff is clogging the water drain ( I thought I checked all the drains a 2nd time after I repaired the shaft)............or ........the tub needs a new spring to spin better???......or ...........I didnt put the tub back in right?

Did you remove the pump?   The pump belt actually runs really loose - with main drive belt and pump belt on you pull the motor back gently as far as it will go then you pinch the pump belt together in the middle.  With the pump adjusted to the correct position you will have about 1/4" to 1/2" between the two sides of the pump belt pinched together in the middle.

If you blew something like a pillow up you may have some of the fluff still running around under the spin basket and plugging the drain outlet.

Also turn the pump by hand without the belt on , it should be very easy and smooth to turn.

OR......maybe it's just not spinning fast enough???...or the spin basket is mounted incorrectly?

these machines are super simple in design but everything has to be adjusted , and in almost perfect working order for the washer to preform properly. i know a lot of this stuff seems petty but just the least little thing starting to go bad or not adjusted properly will throw everything off.
