Maytag LAT8640BAL washer won't spin or drain after "out of balance" stop

Maytag LAT8640BAL washer.

Background comment. Loads with fleece blankets get out of balance easily during spin cycles and shut machine off.

sometime yesterday, machine was working fine. Machine got out of balance and shut off. Redistributed load. Closed lid. Machine started fine. Almost immediately went out of balance again. Opened lid. Redistributed load. Closed lid. Nothing. Was not able to stay with machine at that time. Rotated dial to fill, hoping a complete cycle would restart spin. Back later in day, machine was full of laundry and water, no agitation or draining.

There is (was) a little white ball in the cabinet immediately behind the middle of the lid. That ball would not go back and forth. It was stuck. I was pushing on it and it popped out and went somewhere inside the cabinet.

I read about lid switches being a possible problem. I don't understand electricity much, but I have a very basic Harbor Freight meter I could try to use if I know what to do.

So:

1)The (now) missing and maybe broken part directly behind the lid?

2)The lid switch?

3)Or some mechanical part down inside the cabinet somewhere?

Thank you for any advice you can offer.
