Returning guest presenter Aaron Wilson is back for another exciting discussion. This time, we'll be talking about...
The Science of CYA: How to Keep the Customer Safe, Document Your Work, and Not Get Sued
We take on a lot of liability as appliance repair techs, and that can get us into sticky situations whether we've done anything wrong or not. Aaron will be teaching us all about how to navigate this side of the trade.
We'll start by going over a tragic, real-world case study where a sloppy installation had lethal results, analyzing exactly how the installer's negligence caused this. From there, our scope will expand to what kind of safety precautions we should implement in our own work, both for the customer's sake and for our own.
But even if you do everything perfectly, there's still the famous "technician witch hunt." Well, we'll also talk about how to deal with that by thoroughly documenting your work and putting yourself beyond legal reproach.
A little about our guest, Aaron Wilson:
Aaron has been in the appliance repair trade for about 15 years, starting out by doing installations before moving on to bigger and better things. He worked for C&W Services as a Sub-Zero authorized servicer for a time and thereafter joined Mr. Appliance of Highland Park in the Dallas area, where he worked for years as the lead technician and field service manager. These days, he's making sure that all the appliances of everyone's favorite fried chicken place are in tip-top shape as the Quality and Performance Consultant for the southwest branch of Chick-fil-A. In addition, he has taught many classes on refrigeration repair and advanced diagnostics, during which time he also developed training material for the soft skills side of things, which he is delighted to share with you. On top of all that he's a certified graduate of the Master Samurai Tech Academy, so he knows his stuff!

Kitchenaid Range KFDC500JSS part identity question

I have been unable to find a parts diagram for the Kitchenaid Range KFDC500JSS.  Is there one I can download?

I'd like to know what the black thing on the bottom left is? (picture is from their website's 3D rotation)

I am wondering if the gas line comes up through the floor in the area of that black thing, can that be moved so the range can be slid further back?

Thanks

That black thing is an anti-tip device. Your gas connection is behind the metal shroud just right of center bottom.

Thank you.  I wonder how that could prevent it from tipping forward?

Can it be removed or moved to the other side?  My gas line comes up through the floor (copper tube) in that area.

Also, the Installation manual shows the anti tip bracket which wouldn't fit under the black thing.

If it is not the anti tip bracket then I'm not sure what it could be. The parts diagram doesn't show it.

I've been looking at the 360 views on kitchenaid.com.  I noticed the box is white on Gas models, but black on Dual Fuel models.

The 360 view of the 30", 36" and 48" all have them, but certain colors like the "36" Dual Fuel in Imperial Black" do not have it at all.

Does the parts diagram mention what the 2 prong port on the back is for? Circled in red below.

Actually, if you zoom in, the Imperial Black one does have something different in that corner.

I’ve got the exact same problem. How did you solve this eventually? Did you manage to move the black box?

The black box is the WiFi antenna module. It's kind of a pain to move plus it has a proprietary connection and the wires are very thin easily broken. You have to raise the leveling legs up enough so the anti tip bracket can slide underneath the black box. These companies need to understand that for remodels it's not easy to put a gas line or electrical outlet in a different location vs a new house to accommodate all these locations they have to be in for these appliances to fit. Unfortunately you'll have to get whatever's in the way and move it to the location it states in the install manual. That's why experienced contractors want the appliances at the site before the plumb any openings for this very reason. Some of the installation manuals tell them to put the electrical and gas in the wrong spots too. Especially G.E.'s dual fuel cafe line. In the future make sure your builder or contractor sees the appliances in person before assuming the installation diagrams are correct and store them in a safe space so they don't get damaged because cosmetic damage is only covered for 30 days from almost all manufacturers. Always inspect for damage once you get it on site too even if the box is in perfect condition.

That's very interesting. Good to now know.

Only reason I know is because I changed one on a professional Jenn Air stove because it wouldn't connect to their WiFi.

Nothing bothers me more about my oven than a poor wifi connection 🤯

We do actually have a Samsung gas range which has WiFi for the app you can use.  I've  not had a use for it.

I would love to to know how to change the tones it makes when it's done preheating and when the timer sounds. They are terrible. I don't think there is a way to change them though.
