maytag lat2500AAE tub hard to turn

Alright I have a washer that we thought had a bad motor or water pump and bad belts. The washer was working fine until one day it stopped. We could smell a burning smell and we thought it was the belts that were old and dried and slipping. So we replaced those and turned on the washer the motor starting smoking and shut off. So we though maybe the water pump was bad we can spin it with ease by hand. So we thought ok the motor is bad. We replaced that and it starting smoking too! So we took on the main belt to the brake pulley and left the one belt on to the water pump and the motor ran fine no smoke??? So this is where we stand, also the tub is very hard to turn by hand so I'm thinking something is locked up causing resistance and putting a load on the motor hence why it starts smoking when trying to turn the tub. Bad bearing? bad transmission? I can turn the big pulley on the bottom and i can see the transmission move and the but so I'm kind of lost on what the look at or what the issue could be?

Could simply be clothes caught and jammed between tub and basket. I’d pull basket and look.

I second what @16345Ed said.

If you can turn the pulley very easily in the agitate direction and the agitator moves back and forth but when you turn in the spin direction it is hard but you do see the transmission turning and you have no signs of leakage, (splatter marks of greasy looking water around the inner cabinet at the base of the outer tub), then very likely it is something stuck between the tub top and tub if you are lucky or between spin basket and outer tub, (still maybe accessible by just removing the plastic tub cover).

This is one of the new style with the easily removable plastic tub cover - first just run you fingers around between the top of the spin basket under the plastic cover and you may find something right at the top that you can just pull out without any disassembly.

Thanks guys! Hopefully this is the issue, I'll pull the cover then the pull the tub if I can see or feel anything by hand. I'll keep you posted! "budget Appliance Repair" agitate direction is that clockwise or counter clockwise? and Spin direction same is that clockwise or counter?

I never remember which is which unless I'm at the machine working on it - not something I need to keep in memory, (it would just push something else out that is more important - I remember to much Sh** anyway).
