Whirlpool Electric Oven RBS275PRQ00 - Extremely High Heat

Recommended Posts

On two occasions, our oven has had extremely high heat.  Once was set at 350, and went high enough to activate the oven lock - as it does when using the self cleaning cycle; I turned off the oven by unplugging it (the "OFF" button may or may not have worked).  On a second occasion, the oven was set at 300, and went to about 525 degrees.  The "OFF" button worked.

Usually, the temperature is closely accurate to the temp setting; the oven heat cycles on and off as needed.

Is this likely the control board ($$$$) or the temp sensor ($) or something else?

Could there be a separate relay sticking?  I couldn't find a separate relay on the parts list, so is a relay part of the control board unit?

Sounds like a relay sticking and those are part of the control

The manual gives 2 specs for oven probe 1080 ohm at 70 deg f and 1654 ohms at 350 deg f.

+1 for relay sticking.

It is on the main board - options would be new board, have it rebuilt or replace the relay.

I'm surprised to receive replies so soon;  I thought all of the Samurai Techs would still be recovering from Christmas. 🎄

Thanks.  Two questions:

1) Of course, I don't have an electrical diagram of the oven (not likely that I could decipher it) but: the "OFF" button worked on at least the second occasion of extremely high heat.  How does the "OFF" button work? My concern is that if the relay was stuck, how would the use of the "OFF" but un-stick it?

2) Is the relay on the control board soldered, or plug in?  And where could I get one?

1) The "OFF" button just tell the microprocessor to remove the control voltage from the relay.  The relay will open cutting power from the element.  All we can do is give you our best diagnosis from your given information. A stuck relay is the most likely failure, but there could be problems with the control circuit for the relay and is less likely to happen.

2) The relay is most likely soldered into the board. Look the relay over and write all the number on the relay down. Then do a google search to see what comes up. Suppliers are Mouser, Digikey, Parts - Express to name a few, should come up. There is also Ebay and Amazon.
