Maytag MTW5840TW0 Washer - Clothes Still Wet After Spin Cycle

Recommended Posts

I guess 'tis the season for appliance woes ...

My Maytag MTW5840TW0 washer is leaving the clothes still wet after the spin cycle.  Running another spin cycle takes care of the clothes but I would really like to fix it.  I know that some washers have link filters in the bottom of the tub, but after disassembling the agitator I know that this is not one of those tubs.  So I'm left thinking its either a pump,  transmission, or clutch issue.  The drum visually seems to be spinning as fast as it always has - I know that's not real scientific.

I was hoping for some help in troubleshooting this before I go throwing money at it or purchase a new one.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Jeff

Are the clothes stuck to the side of the tub or laying in the bottom?

Stuck to the side if I recall correctly.  I have a load running now and will check when done to confirm.

The clothes were stuck to the side for the most part.  The bottom of them seemed to be where the water was concentrated.  There isn't any water in the tub.

When I ran it on the second spin cycle water was almost immediately pumped out.  I'm not sure if that is useful at all.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the first test. I'll explain the drain/ spin cycle of a direct drive.  Agitate the motor runs one direction,  when it goes into spin the motor runs the opposite direction and the transmission goes into neutral. In neutral the basket does not spin the pump drains out all the water.  The timer has a slight pause spot where the motor slows down and all most stops. At this pause time the shifter inside the transmission will engage with a clunk or thud sound and when the motor restarts the basket will spin. This when the rest of the water is extracted by spinning basket and the cloth are thrown up againist the basket. There are a few failures that can affect spin. The usual one is where the shifter doesn't shift and the basket never spins - clothes stay on the bottom of the basket. Sometimes the no shift is caused by the timer not pausing the motor.  Next failure is where the transmission goes into spin and actually spins the basket with the tub full of water then at the pause the transmission goes into neutral. Because of the weight of the full tub of water the spin start very slow and increases in speed as the water is pumped out.  There can be issue with the clutch and brake arm causing issues, but these are usually noisey.

From your description of the clothes i would be leaning toward spinning in neutral.  You would have to replace or rebuild the transmission to correct. May want to run a few more washes to double check. There should be a few more suggestion from other guys come that may help as well.

This gear cases leak oil,  when they do they splatter on the clutch and cause it to slip,  tilt unit and and see if any signs of oil on the bottom of the gear case or on the floor,

Quick check for the brake/clutch mechanism on this washer. When the washer is off, if you can spin the tub relatively easily by hand then there’s an issue with the clutch system, either dirty and needs cleaned or needs replaced

I can rotate the tub a few degrees by hand but cannot spin it.  I hear a “spring” noise and am unable to rotate any more.

I just noticed that the unit it relatively Loud as well ... must have either not been paying attention to it or selectively ignoring it.

I believe it’s about 10 years old And I wouldn’t have an issue putting a clutch or pump in it, but a motor or transmission wouldn’t be cost effective in my opinion.

I just ran a load and it was perfect.  Go figure.
