Washer not spinning. Maytag Atlantis. Model number MAV9750AWW Serial number 25272170GL

Trying to help my son-in-law fix his Maytag Atlantis washer. Model number MAV9750AWW Serial number 25272170GL. The spin cycle is not working.  He replaced the belt but said he cannot spin the drum by hand. Also, it makes a loud bang at the end of the spin cycle.  Sounds to me like the drum might be seized?  Anyone had similar problems with a top loader unit ?  Any help appreciated. Thanks

Take the belt off and turn the pump, motor and transmission both directions by hand. Motor and pump should spin freely. The transmission should agitate in one direction and the other diection the brake should lift and whole transmission should spin.

after doing that stuff,  check this part 12002213 if its good , you will most likely have a bad transmission

Thank you for the information.  I had him check and the pump and motor are free.  The pulley on the transmission will only turn in the direction of agitating, not the opposite.  He removed the pulley and thrust bearing.  The transmission turns freely in both directions but the drum will not spin.  Not sure how the brake works on this.  If the brake is bad it appears to be an obsolete part.  Looks like the belt is getting worn due to the fact it is just slipping on the pulley when it calls for spin cycle.  Next steps??

The thrust bearing is supposed to release the brake when you turn the pulley clockwise.

I’m thinking it might be the thrust bearing, or how it was shimmed. He said he replaced a little over a year ago.  I’m assuming If it’s not adjusted properly it won’t travel far enough to release the spring tension and release the brake.  Im going to take a look and see if it can be shimmed or adjusted. Or if the cam is somehow worn. Thanks.

Yes !     To add another step to it, when everything is right, when you turn the transmission shaft clockwise it should lock down, allowing the thrust bearing to push up on the brake and spin the transmission.

I’m going to get a look at this today. He installed a new thrust bearing kit and said the drum released when he manually turned the pulley. When back together and ran a load of laundry it would not spin. Same issue.  Does the transmission have anything to do with spin cycle?  I’m thinking as long as the brake is off and tub is free the transmission does nothing. The drum is spun by the motor?  I might remove the brake and start from scratch but wondering what I’m getting into. Thanks again.

I'll just quote @evaappliance

And yes the motor spins the drum.

Does the trans need to be locked to release the brake?  It free wheels left or right with pulley by hand. How can the thrust bearing climb up the shaft to release brake?

yes , if the thrust bearing is for sure good , and the transmission is not locking down allowing the pulley to ride up the helix , you will have a bad transmission
