I have a GE Refrigerator Model GSH25JFXB.  There is an issue with the freezer.  Frost builds up on the items stored in the top part of the freezer.  When the freezer defrosts, this frost doesn’t fully go away, but is refrozen into small puddles of ice (quarter size) on the items.  There are also small frozen water drops hanging down from the front of the upper wire shelves.  It doesn’t happen to the stuff on the bottom half of the freezer.  This has been somewhat of an issue for years, but not quite as bad.  About 6-7 years ago, I replaced the thermistor on top of the coil with a GE replacement part.  This helped a little bit.  About 6 months ago, the coil froze up, so I replaced the defrost heater, defrost timer, and again replaced the thermistor on top of the coil…all were GE replacement parts.  Things were fine for about a week, then the frost issue came back worse…or so it seems.  I thought it might have something to do with the ice bucket, so I turned off the ice maker and removed the bucket.  Didn’t help. One thing that I noticed is that it seems that the defrost cycle runs multiple times a day.  Thoughts on what might be the issue here.

First thing to check is make sure the freezer door is sealing properly at the top

That was one of the first things that I had checked.  It's sealing perfectly.

Had a thought...could the "flapper" in the ice dispensing chute possibly be worn and allow some warm air to come into the freezer?

Posted

Quite possible, easiest thing is to shine I flashlight up through or just look and see if the rubber is wavy at all

Posted

Easiest thing is poor water down chute from inside. If it leaks through so does air.

I used a flashlight and poured some water in the chute.  It doesn't look like that's the issue.  Could it possibly be something with the damper between the freezer and refrigerator that is letting air into the freezer from the refrigerator?

The main board sometimes causes long or too often defrost cycles.

Also some models have foam rubber ajacent or near the thermistor. Sometimes that foam rubber will get saturated with moisture causing the thermistor to get a fause reading.

Its worth noting that when the defrost cycle is too long the ice in the icebin will stick together bad and frost normally builds on the bottom of the ice bin and on top the ice.

Another thing that can cause it is poor airflow. Look for any ice blockin airways. The fan could be running on slow speed all the time. On these refrigerators sometimes the fan will constantly speed up then slow down. The board will fix that problem.
