Is this normal? MDE9700AYW Maytag Electric Dryer

I opened up this dryer today for cleanout and there was black tar material (probably drum dampening material) all over the bottom and sides of the dryer. It covers the heating coil shroud (actually baked on pretty good), the exhaust vent tube, and wiring.

Is this normal?

Can it ignite?

Does it need to be removed?

Wanted to post a picture but I couldn't figure out how to do that...

Yes, also check your vent for restrictions or blockage. Sounds like the inside of the dryer cabinet got too hot

Agreed. I think Knable is right. Maybe shorted element, bad thermostat or bad control board.. something caused it to overheat and melt the dampening crap

Not to uncommon for the soundproofing to turn loose after several years without any problems in the dryer
