I own a vintage Maytag washer in which the lower section of the two piece agitator flops side to side a good 10 degrees or so, the tiny set screw securing the part to the transmission shaft is tight.

In time I fear that the agitator's splines will wear out to the point where it will spin freely on the shaft, rendering the washer useless. A new replacement agitator can't be found anywhere on the planet, it's been obsolete for some time now.

Has anyone else ran into this problem who can suggest a fix for it? I was considering using Marine-Tex epoxy, but I suspect that will permanently "glue" the agitator to the shaft, something I want to avoid for serviceability.

This machine has been an ultra reliable washer, I've owned it for 18 years. The only repairs I've done to it was to replace the lid switch and the 2 nylon balls for the lid pivot. I've replaced the water supply hoses several times (it lives indoors), but I consider that a maintenance item. Everything else on it is original, timer, motor, drive belt, water pump, internal hoses etc.

I'd like to hold on to it as long as possible, the machines on the market now, with the exception of a Speed Queen "Classic Clean" model are pure garbage.

TIA!

Many Thanks for the part number, however upon searching multiple sites, it is also obsolete.

I'll keep looking 👍

Sorry, had no idea they discontinued that one, this one is out of the coin operated maytag , little shorter but will work .

Have you removed the agitator and check the splines to see if they are actually wallowed out?   I've never seen a Maytag agitator spline wear out like that.....
