Kitchenaid fridge model KSCK25FVSS03 won't dispense ice

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I have a KitchenAid model KSCK25FVSS03 which will not dispense ice. The ice hopper is full. Pressing on the dispenser paddle results in what I assume is the sound of a relay click somewhere in the rear of the fridge. I checked for DC voltage at the auger motor, and I read 0 volts.

My first guess would be to try replacing the control panel board (WPW10261285) but on general I try to avoid parts swapping as much as possible.

I'd really like to trace the 120VDC from the inverter forward, but if there are schematics online for this model, I can't find them.

Any advice on next steps would be much appreciated.

Many many years ago I believe there was a beer fund on this site which I contributed to, I'm happy to do that again.

Thanks again,

Matt

I have the wiring diagram for this model.  Not sure how to upload it since its PDF.  Get me your email address and i'll send it to you.

For Whirlpool brands, a workaround to find service info online is to use a free parts breakdown site like SearsPartsDirect.com to find the part number for the printed tech sheet. For this unit, it's shown as location #1 on the "Cabinet Parts Diagram" page, p/n W10349213 . Then google that number and pdf , generally you'll find it posted somewhere

For any recent Whirlpool-built SxS , check the wiring at the bottom hinge of the freezer door for any signs of chafed or severed wires, possibly concealed in the wiring loom

Hey Josh, thanks much: mcubed@outlook.com should do the trick

Rhubarb - thanks for the tips, especially the part about the frayed wires

Thanks again guys,

Matt

Josh - did you get a chance to send the PDF? I'm not seeing anything on my end.

Thanks -

Matt

I sent a tech sheet, not the exact model but maybe it will do it.

Josh -

Got it - thanks much. I think it'll be close enough, at least now I can see the path from the inverter on to the dispenser motor.

Thanks again!

Hey everyone -

I've completed some more troubleshooting, which has raised a couple new questions. Before I get into that - is there some sort of protocol/etiquette for compensating the site/contributors? Back in the day there was a way to pay the Samurai for his time, if there is still something like, or a beer fund. I'm happy to contribute.

Quick recap of symptoms:

All refrigerator/freezer functions normal, with the exception of the ice dispenser. Pressing the dispenser paddle results in a relay clicking in the rear of the unit, but the auger motor does not engage, and I read 0 volts at its connector.

The water dispenser functions normally, as do all other options accessed via the LCD menus.

On to what I've done:

I verified continuity of the wiring from the auger motor back to the gemini flash board. (GY/OR and BU leads check OK end to end).

I measured voltage on pins 12 and 6 on connector P7 of the gemini flash board. I read 0 volts. I then removed the connector and tested the leads (RD/WH, RD) straight out of the inverter. Still read 0 volts. Perhaps it energizes when the compressor is fed?

I then disconnected the power supply, and measured voltage at connector P2. Multimeter shows 17VDC.

Questions: I'm not sure if I need a new inverter, gemini board, or power supply board. As the motor is labeled 120VDC, my first guess would be the power supply as I'm only seeing 17 volts out of it.

Having said that, all the other electronics are functioning normally, so, where the 120VDC is supposed to come from is a mystery to me.

Update for any future souls with this problem: Googling around a bit, it looks like there's a rectifier built into the motor. It should be getting 120VAC from the gemini board and then converting it to DC locally. It's not getting any voltage, so I'm going to go with replacing the gemini board (WPW10209635). Don't believe the 120VDC label on the motor is the lesson I learned, I suppose.

I'll post back with results.

Thanks!

Also, AdrianMutescu: I found the tech sheet for the unit tucked away in the bottom louver. It's identical to what you emailed me. Just wanted to let ya know for future reference that the tech sheet you mailed me correlates to KSCK25FVSS03. Thanks for getting that to me, zooming in on a PDF is much easier on these old eyes.

Have checked for 120 vac at P13 pin 5 lb/bk? It part of the door switch interlock so you can't dispense ice with the door open.

Nope, didn't check that - great call out. Lemme do that now.

Yep, 120 at the board w/doo closed, so we're good there. Thanks Vance

Hey everyone - just wanted to close the loop on this. I finally got around to replacing the control board (WPW10209635) and that resolved the problem.

And perhaps a test one might try if you're unsure about the control board being the problem: If you gently shake the board and you hear relay guts rattling around, it's probably a bad board :)

Thanks for all the tips -

Matt
