Kenmore 665.13969K017 (Whirpool GU2500XTPS7)- electrical odor and shut down

Kenmore 665.13969K017 (Whirpool GU2500XTPS7)

Hi guys, started the D/W last night, and within minutes had a strong odor of electrical and the panel went dark and everything shut down.  Breaker did not trip.

This unit is now 8-1/2 years old.  Using the appliance "half life" theory, I'm guessing I should just replace the unit rather than diagnosing and trying to repair.  Hypothesizing it's a control board, and those parts are all $200+ (if they can be found).

Does this sound correct?  I will open up the door and look for obvious signs of burnout, but aside from that I am not sure how to diagnose the individual boards to find out which should be swapped out.

Thanks.!

Well, that was easier to find than I expected.  The "Main Control Board" is burned up.  And some collateral damage (i.e. melting) on the plastic coating on the inside of the door panel.  That purple wire is actually melted to the plastic.  After pulling it off, the wire itself does not seem to be compromised.

Now that sixty-four thousand dollar question:  Is this worth buying a new control board and replacing it to see if it works?  Or is there likely collateral damage on other attached boards?  I can find zero signs of moisture or water within the door itself.

Thanks again.

OK upon further review, this has been declared "Totalled".  Along with the main board, I would have to procure and splice in the power connector.  (Or what I assume to be the power connector based on the thicker gauge wire).  Seems that the point of origin of the fire is on the connection and it melted the connector itself.   Keeping the evidence to try to determine root cause!
