Does this indicate a production change, simply noting that they moved the pump, or are they saying that it can be moved during service to make drain quieter?

It's a different design; instead of a hose from the tub to the pump, the bump housing is attached directly to the tub.

IMO, the easiest way to access the pump is from the bottom of the machine.

So it's a production change and not a field service thing?

Yeah pretty sure it’s a production change. I just replaced one of these pumps and it was mounted directly to the bottom of the drum with 4 screws that screw upwards. There is no rubber drain boot like you commonly see. @vee8power makes a good point that accessing this drain pump when it’s mounted on the bottom of the drum is easier from the bottom. There are 2 front screws and 2 back screws you’ll need to access. In the repair I did, there was a laundry counter above the washer so I ended up removing the front panel and the back panel to access the pump which worked fine. But trying from just the front panel would be hard to reach the 2 back screws. I didn’t know the bottom could come off but if I could I wouldn’t do it anyway because like I said the washer I worked on was under a laundry counter and I didn’t have room to tilt the washer and I wasn’t going to mess around with disconnecting hoses. I took pictures of the front and back when I was working on it. The first and third pictures are the front view. The second picture is the back view.

Is the bottom panel removable?
