Amana ARGS7650E oven and broiler igniters won't light

I have strayed from the way of the Samurai, and I am now being punished.

I have a 26-year-old Amana args7650e oven. Both the oven igniter and the broiler igniter suddenly quit working (and by "quit working," I mean that they don't glow). The stovetop still works fine. Troubleshooting that I've done includes:

  • Putting a voltmeter across the terminals of both igniters and verifying that there's not 120VAC there when oven or broil are selected. I've tried this both by backprobing the connector and by disconnecting the igniter at the connector.
  • Disconnecting the oven igniter, wiring it directly to 120VAC, and verifying that it glows, so I know that it works.
  • Connecting the ground lead of the voltmeter to the 120VAC ground wire where it comes in at the bottom of the oven, probing both of the igniter connections, and verifying that there's 120VAC on both of them.
  • Putting the control board through its self-test and verifying that all relays click.
  • Buying a used controller board, trying it, and finding no difference.
  • Putting a jumper wire across both of the thermo switches in the top of the oven. Jumpering one of them turns on the fan, but that's the only effect.
  • Testing that the thermo sensor works by lighting a match under it and watching the temperature on the display increase.

I'm pretty good with 12V automotive electronics, but don't have a lot of experience with 120VAC stuff and I can't find a wiring diagram for the oven. But it sure seems that the igniters are getting power but the relays aren't switching that to ground.

Not that it really matters, but the oven igniter is only a few months old. The broiler igniter was replaced many years ago.

I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks.

You can check for 120 volts between J4 Pin 10 (neutral for the board) and j5 Pin 2 (120 volts for the bake ignitor) when the stove is set to bake.

Then check for 120 volts from the bake ignitor to J4 Pin 10 (neutral for the board)

If you have this, it means there's a wiring problem between the valve and it's neutral connection where the power cord connects. On a range, it would usually be from mice.

This is all assuming that the diagram I found actually goes with this range.

Am not getting 120VAC between J4-10 and J5-2 when stove is set to bake.

That means that the board is not attempting to energize the ignitor.

Check from J5 Pin 4 to J4 Pin 8.

If you have 120 volts, the oven high limit is open.
