Brand new GE GUD27ESMM1WW Washing machine wont do final spin

Recommended Posts

Hi. Just looking for some advice as I am out of ideas. Had an issue with my old front load washer. It would not complete its final spin and the clothes would be soaked when the cycle was finished. Long story short I bought a brand new GE top load washer (Model # GUD27ESMM1WW) and had it installed.

Ran our first load and lo and behold it has the same issue. Works normally, agitated fine, drains fine but when its time to do the final spin it starts powering up then shuts off.

I checked the drain hose and drain pipe. No blockages and drains fine. Ive check that the machine is getting proper power by testing at the back of the machine with a multimeter.

Im out of ideas at this point. Im thinking it has to be something electrical at this point due to the same problem with both machines but ive tested both the power into the machine and the breaker in the box and everything is normal.

Its gotta be an issue in my house as opposed to the machines right? Super super slim chances that a brand new machine has the same issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Just check the outlet with a voltage meter. line to neutral should be 120vac, ground to neutral should be 0vac, ground to line should be 120vac. Take the measurement with the washer off and during the cycle.

Its a 240 V outlet and ive checked it without the machine running and everything checks out fine. Ill try testing it while its trying to do the final spin and see if theres anything unusual. Im not an electrician so anything I should be looking out for? Voltage drop ect?

Opps, didn't look to see that it was a laundry center.  For a 4 prong outlet,  L1 to L2 should be 240vac, L1 to neutral should be 120vac, L2 to neutral should be 120vac, neutral to ground should be 0vac, L1 to ground should be 120vac, L2 to ground should be 120vac. For a 3 prong L1 to L2 should be 240 vac, L1 to neutral should be 120vac, L2 to ground should be 120vac. Main things to look for voltage wise. L1 to L2 voltage should not drop, L1 to neutral and L2 to neutral voltage should be the same at 120vac. On a 4 prong the neutral to ground voltage should be 0vac, but less then 1vac is ok

Checked everything you mentioned while not running and while running. Nothing out of the ordinary. Also installed a new wall receptacle just in case. Still the same issue. Really scratching my head here. Have a tech coming out hopefully next week but it would be nice to do some laundry before then.

Let us know what the tech find as an issue.

Will do. Thanks for the help.

I’m suspecting drain siphoning.

I checked out that as a possible issue as well. Checked the wall drain for blockage. I also ran a drain/spin cycle and let the machine drain into buckets. Still no final spin. The machine drains fine into the wall drain. I even held the drain hose above the drain with a 1” air gap and still no final spin. I have a tech coming out tom so hopefully he will figure it out.

Did you check the codes? I had a problem like this with a customer's laundry centre (this model), a code that pointed to a lid lock and some other codes related to the washer being stuck. (timeout with water in tub, balance code, lid lock and a knob between two click points) Troubleshooting chart said to replace lock even if it tested good. These washers are very sensitive to codes.

I own one too. Bought it for $50 from a hospital worker, the dryer door switch wire was broken. Turned the washer on, and in 30 seconds starts making noise and I could hear the belt fall off. Open the cabinet and the thing was stuffed with clothes and SHOES! Packed full. Couldn't believe my eyes. Piece of clothing got wrapped in the belt and pulled it off. This washer has a large gap around the tub, it's easy for clothes to go through it when pulling them out of the tub. So check to make sure nothing is stalling the tub from spinning down there.

Update: Had a tech come out last week and determine it was a faulty lid lock switch. He came put today and replaced it and…… no dice! Same issue. He ran some tests and determined it was the control board so I have to wait another week for him to come back. I wasnt home for the techs visit today but I spoke to him on the phone and he was sure that the control board was the issue.

What a pain in the butt! These are literally brand new machines that got delivered and installed. Malfunction on the first load. If the new control board doesnt fix this issue I going to call Costco and get them to come pick up the unit and swap it out with another one and give me a gift card for mental pain and anguish.

Is that what cures mental pain? Gift cards? 😄 Costco causes mental pain to me. The lineups, non stop shopping frenzy. Clearly people don't know what 'Wholesale' and 'Retail' means. The real cure is to cut up the Costco card.

So got a new set of machines dropped off today. Same brand and model. Did a test load and everything worked perfectly. What a relief! Guess the last washing machine was just a lemon. Glad that whole ordeal is over! Spent all that time researching and diagnosing for nothing but what were the chances of the brand new machine having the same issue as my old machine. Bad luck.
