Whirlpool Washer WTW5105HW0 intermittent cycle problems

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My 1 year-old Whirlpool WTW5105HW0 washer is displaying some odd behavior - which I cannot locate anyone that has had similar issues.  A search of just about every appliance repair forum has not generated any results.  About every third load, the machine will do the following:

1. Fill (normally)

2. Agitate (as it should), but display says "Spinning" while it's doing this
3. After approximately 2 minutes, drain

4. Agitate (with no water in the basket). Display says "Washing" while its doing this.

5. Cycle will then go into Spin, Rinse, Spin to complete the cycle normally.

I've completed nearly every diagnostic test in the service manual with no luck in identifying the problem.  All voltages and resistances are within range.  No error codes have been thrown. The control board LED is blinking on/off as it should be.  During the component activation tests and diagnostic cycle, everything functions normally.  Visual inspection underneath did not reveal any obvious problems.

Based on the behavior, I'm thinking its the main control given that everything else has checked out, but I just wanted a second opinion in case anyone has seen this before.  I suspected the shifter or optical sensor, but those appear to be functioning normally and the machine passes all of those tests.  Any help would be appreciated...thanks in advance!

Verify power for proper polarity and ground. Any error codes?

Posted

Power has been verified for proper polarity and ground.  The machine has not had any error codes. It seems the machine doesn't sense there is a problem with its operation.  The water level sensor test did pass, so it should know that it's empty during that "washing" cycle when its running dry.

If it is spinning when it should be agitating, or agitating when it should be spinning, replace the shifter! I would also inspect the clutch sprockets for damage or wear.

I recently had one drive me about nuts. All the manual tests and components tested fine. Try to run a rinse cycle. It would work sometimes. The transmission had a mouse make a nest up inside of it. So all the nesting material was blocking the optical sensor from seeing. Had same thing happen once before with a bunch of pet hair.
